My pride and joy is coming to the end of her 12 month approved warranty and just got a renewal quote from BMW which i think is rather expensive. Question is how many are running an F10 under Extended warranty or is it best to just save that money aside for when something goes wrong and use and Indie? Car is 5yrs old and has been faultless bar a broken rear spring fixed under warrant?

How much is 'rather expensive' ?
You could see about getting a quote off Warranty Direct (probably the best of the aftermarket ones), but at the end of the day, if you've not got warranty cover and something major goes wrong, you could be looking at thousands in repair costs - a gearbox or engine rebuild for example.
Which level of cover have you gone for on the BMW quote - there are three different levels of cover, and different levels of excess as well, which can alter the price quite a bit

I've run with BMW's insured extended warranties on BMW models outside the 3-year manufacturer warranty and am "quids in", even after all the payments.

I've just paid £859.17 for the next year (under 60k miles) on my 2011 F11 535i. One payment, fully comprehensive with wear and tear included. £100 excess and emergency cover.

Even stupid things like comfort access failing cost more than the yearly premium to get sorted. Included a recovery, hire car for 3-days and a new door handle. CA door handle is not cheap.

Last year an air spring, side view camera and programming exceeded the year's payment.

Currently waiting for another door handle (comfort access has failed on another door), another side view camera (camera cost about £265) and there is another long programming session required.

Imagine what it would cost if something like Adaptive Drive or the HUD fails. I've had a new V8 engine in a 540i, so well into 5-figures in one hit. Covered over 2,500 miles in a BMW courtesy car over 6 weeks, while being sorted.

My 330d had a broken front spring, twice, (in different years) simple failure but the cost 'all in' exceeded the cost of the warranty for each year. Even the uplift and return on a flatbed costs around £400 to my local BMW dealer and back, according to the local recovery contractor.

I see the extended warranty as part of the running costs, almost fixes the price and gives peace of mind. Having the emergency cover is also worth having, have used several times, where hire cars have run into several hundred pounds, without the recovery and fixes.

I have only had a couple of bills on my three F10's, and I have to say, I would never run one out of warranty. They are truly excellent cars, but when they go wrong...they cost. all of my claims have been warranty ones.

3rd party warranties....now there is another question....I think I would pay a little extra for BMW warranty.

Hi

The warranty topic was well discussed in this thread

http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthre...light=warranty

If I were taking out a warranty I would run with BMW's own based upon the comprehensive coverage and from what I have read minimal exclusions/wriggling out of claims.

One point to bear in mind is that if you set it up as Direct Debit and your car is initially under 60k then the price will remain low.

If you take an annual policy the price will rise significantly upon renewal once you are over 60k.

I always insist on the warranty simply for the lack of hassle and peace of mind. I got absolutely sick of playing random part lottery every time my old E39 went wrong - at my expense - and running F10's with warranties has made this go away. Sure, at higher cost, but it means you know where you are.

I don't see the point in Driveline though - for me it needs to be Comprehensive or not at all. If it doesn't take of everything without hassle or concern as to whether its covered etc then what is it really offering? Major mechanical failure is probably quite rare - we have run the extended warranty on all our cars for a number of years now and it's mostly bits and bobs it picks up.

It is frustrating how BMW price the policies, though. A warranty for a 435d xDrive M Sport with every fitted extra and a folding metal hard-top roof is cheaper than the warranty on a manual 518d. The 5 Series policy price is right on the cusp of being frankly too expensive.

Point taken and after doing more research I'm now taking the comprehensive one with £250 excess. That way I know the most I'll have to pay should anything go wrong is £250 and if it's less then I'll just pay for the repair outside the warranty. That makes my monthly DD £89 including roadside assistance which I'm happy with

I've always benefitted from the fact my models have been at the higher value end of the series, with options which could be expensive to fix.

Makes it at least feel better value. My current car was around £60k list, not sure I'd feel the same about the warranty cost if it was the most basic 520d.

Just had a quote for my 2014 F11 520d. It will have gone over 60k miles by the time the manufacturer warranty expires in September. The quote from BMW is £1706! (this is for the full cover. The driveline only is still £1206) The increase in premiums after 60k miles is quite significant! Under 60k miles its about £849.

I think these cars are just too expensive to put right outside of the BMW warranty. Pretty much anything costs over a grand.

Even if you do not claim, BMW still had you covered had you needed it. So you can't view the premium as "wasted" if you don't claim. That's very negative thinking. Much better for you house *not* to burn down right?

I'm quids in too. I've had to claim on mine twice since I took out the cover in April. One was a new CPU unit and another was a seatbelt locking mechanism(4 weeks in a loan car).

Comprehensive with no recovery is:

£973 or £99/mth with £0 excess
£775 or £80 with £100 excess
£582 or £63 with £250 excess

The recovery adds £75 to the premium.. the other warranties aren't much cheaper but cover way less!!!

I hear tells me go £100 excess, so I get 2 claims

3 weeks ago the engine management light came on in my 65 plate 525d and the car needed a new mass air flow sensor. That resolved the engine management light until last weekend and now the light has come on again and the car now needs a new EGR cooler.

Not great for a car that is only 18 months old and I dread to think how much this would cost if the car was out of warranty.
