Thanks for the DIY info! Just completed mine; 40 minutes with a Torx-25 instead.
Not as easy as on my e39, but looks great on the f10!

Well I went out and gave this a try and no luck. I have a 550 so I wonder if there is less space. After I took the screws out I had maybe an inch to work with. Should I use a long screw driver to push down on the top tabs? How do I get to the bottom ones? Maybe a precision hook shaped tool would work?
Also, It looks like the chrome ring and plastic fins are seperate parts so I could spray the fins black. I have dark graphite so I dont know how it would look totaly blacked out.

Another option is vinyl - Anyone know where I can find black vinyl for the fins?

Thanks for the help!

Cheapest place is www.getbmwparts.com or JBspeed. Total cost is $130.

Great post LACSTER!!!! I just installed my grills but took me about 2hrs and a helper as I was using my hands to push on the tab while the other person was pulling on the grill. I was a little worry about the flexibility of the front center as i was pulling it back to reach my hand to push the bottom clips. By any chance, do you have a DIY for the front bumper side reflectors?

getBMWparts.com has two versions of this grill. It's very hard to tell the difference in the tiny photos they provide. Which ones are you guys using? They have a.) OEM BMW Performance F10 5 Series Gloss Black Grills, and b.) Genuine BMW M Performance Black Kidney Grills

Okay so with many pm's asking how to install these grilles I decided to go out today and do the process agian with pics so fellow members can see how easy this is to do. All you need is a Torx-20 screwdriver and about 20 minutes.

First off remove rubber strip in the center on the hood right in front of inside bumber.

Attachment 421827

Once done you should see two hex bolts underneath.

Attachment 421828

Now you can start removing the 6 hex bolts using the Torx-20 screwdriver. The 2 in the center is straight forward but the two right on top of each headlight has a cover the needs to be removed first.

Attachment 421830

There's two clips/locks holding the cover in place. All you need to do is with you fingers just pull the center pin up ( real easy )

Attachment 421831

Below. Repeat on other side

Attachment 421832

Once all screws are removed you'll need to pull the center of the front bumper forward to remove chrome grilles. There's nine clips holding it to the bumper. With one hand just pull the grill out on the portion of the grill where you are pushing the clip down with your other hand.

Attachment 421833

Attachment 421834

Once both grilles are removed you'll see this.

Attachment 421835

Now time to install BMW Performance Grilles.

Attachment 421836

Side by side comparison.

Attachment 421837

Time to put everything back. The two hex bolts on top of the headlights need to be put on first before the clips/lock pins.

Attachment 421838

Then place the clip/lock pin in and press down then put lock pin in to secure.

Attachment 421839

Attachment 421840

The center piece removed in the beginning need to snap back in.

Attachment 421841

Now the extra....... Painting silver trim near the fog lights.

All you have to do to remove the mesh is take two fingers and pull forward on each corner to remove the mesh.

Attachment 421842

Unclip the three parts holding the trim to the mesh.

Attachment 421843

Attachment 421844

Attachment 421845

Paint trim with matte black or gloss spray paint. Your choice. I used matte black then reverse process and install.

Attachment 421846

Here's the completed look.

Attachment 421847

Hope this helps all the DIY'er.

Kevin
Thanks for the. DIY

I was changing my grills out for the second time, and it was much easier to pull the front bumper out of the way when it was warm. I suggest doing this mod after the car has been running for a while and the bumper material is warm, much more pliable.

Just take a flathead screwdriver, press down on the plastic tabs in the clips, pull the grills out. The new ones just snap right in.
I started with the best intentions of going through the whole bumper unscrew process, but after reading your post, and a few seconds of energetic test-pulling on the grills, I found that they came out smoothly with no extraordinary force. The Turner Motorsports matte black replacements went in just as easily as the original grills came out. Everything seems snug and correct. Thanks for the idea of not having to unscrew the bumper!

Just did mine and your post saved me time and $$$. At 1st look under the hood of my 550i I was like oh shyt gotta let the dealers do it but then looked on the forum here and found your thread and DIY. Excellent! 20 mins later and a gentle tug with pressure from an auto trim tool on the rear and both grilles are out and the new ones installed. I went with carbon fiber sport grilles I got from Modbargins. Looks really great! Thanks man.

Thank you for this Lacster. I just did it yesterday. My fingers got stuck really good in the grill when trying to pull them out And I really applied pressure on them from inside as well. I imagine this would be even harder when the plastic gets older after a few years time.

I just did this in about one minute. After reading all of the posts, I decided to do this when the car was nice and warm. Car was in work parking lot all day in sun (85 degrees), drove about 15 minutes home to find my grills on the front porch fresh from Turner Motorsport.

Came in and cracked a beer, then went out to the garage to gauge how big of a task this would be. Grabbed a hold of the right kidney grill and started to pull outward while wiggling just a bit. Grill came right out. Ditto for the left. Put in my new grills in about the same time.

Must be the temperature of the plastic that made it so easy...that and maybe the fact that it is only a couple weeks old?

Lacster,

Thanks so much for the thread! I remember that doing this on my e92 M3 was much harder, but also remember doing it in the winter.

Always have to crack open a beer when working on or detailing the ride!

THe other day I had tried installing my M Performance grills by taking off the screws and clips on the bumper per the DIY process. It was a PITA and I could not get the grills off! I gave up and figured I would try it another time.

Based on feedback I read on here, I took the route of trying to pull them off without doing any removal of screws and clips. I just got back home from a meeting and the engine was hot after having sat in stop and go traffic so I gave it a try. Done! They popped off! The bottom was a bit of a challenge but some force and wiggling, it let loose. Far easier way to do it.
