Make sure you remove all the screws under the hood.

That's all I ca think of if the bumper won't budge

Look under the commercial marketplace section here of the forum. A few vendors here carry the grill. Now aftermarket matt grill available too.

Thanks for this.
My dad just asked me to get some black grilles for his car. This info will be really helpful!

I went the other way

Well, sort of... I recently purchased a 550i chrome grille for my Sophisto Grey 520d. I thought the brighter grille actually looked better on the SG than the dark one.

Here's a few thoughts on the replacement process.

Firstly, thanks Lacster on your post. I don't think I would've attempted it without it.

Now, the removal. I'm an Auto Engineer, and this was not an easy thing to do. Reading Lacster's post and doing it myself had me thinking that BMW had tightened tolerances and fitment between then and now.

Firstly, a few pointers. When you undo the bolts and scrivets holding the bumper in place, don't expect it to open and fall forward like a gaping mouth at you. You have to prise it forward and you'll get about an inch or two opening (at best) to shine a torch down and get your screwdriver to.

Before you start the process of pulling the grilles out, I would (and did) put some lo-tack masking tape around the grille openings so you can reduce the risk of damaging the paint when you're pushing against the bumper fascia and when the grilles finally pop out.

I was really surprised at the force required to pull these out. I'd say, if your car was a recent build, don't expect an easy time of it. Once you do and learn from one side though, the other side seems a little easier. At least you know what to expect.

Of, course, it's all worth it though....

Ok. Surely don't wanna ruin my father´s new car that has still not even arrived. It´s a 520d wagon.
It was a quite simple process on my e92 although I was a but scared of having to push the bumper a bit to much. Of course each car is different.
Thanks for the heads up.

One of the members here managed to pop up the grills by squeezing his hand through the gap. No need to undo any of the bolts and screws. Have to have skinny hands though.

...and a good imagination.

I'd say that was nigh-on impossible. I'd like to see him do that on youtube!

Also, as I mentioned, they may have tightened the tolerance between the grille and bumper clipping points recently.

OEM performance grille and lower silver trims

The OEM black kidney grilles from the dealer are the same plastic grilles offered as stock...just painted from factory to match the shawdowline exterior trim as gloss black. You could probably get a shop to have your stock silver/chrome ones painted gloss black and it would be same product to save money! They just have clips holding them so all I did was use both hands and pull each grille directly out. I didnt take out the rubber seal or any screws. Didn't need to pry anything...just grab firmly and pull out! Took total of 10 mins to install both sides.

As for the lower silver trim pieces, I just flipped the tab in middle center out and applie pressure to remove it from the mesh grille. Didnt require to remove anything else in order to have these prepped and painted gloss black to match. Removing these took less than 2 mins each side.

Installed my grills today. It helps to have a slender hand. My daughter was happy to help. Now my Carbon Black M-Sport looks menacing! Thank you Lacster for the instructions and pictures.

How about the trim on the window frames? I personally think it would look much better if all chrome trims are all blackened to match the grilles. Just my taste.
