R1 Concept Carbon Geomet & R1 Performance Pads

Hey guys,

My original rotors and pads combo were warped and had a lot of wheel shake during regular braking. Kevin from R1 Concepts reached out and said he had a great deal for me. At first I never heard of R1 Concepts so I was a little skeptical and I really didn't want to have that wheel shake again after spending a bunch of money on pads and rotors all around.

I bought their slotted Geomet rotors and their Performance Pads. Kevin did say expect some noise from that combo since it is performance oriented. I have been driving with these for about a 2 or 3 months and I have to say I like them a lot. Their initial bite just like most say is little lite but when you really hit it the car to me now stops much faster. Under hard braking I feel more confident up to this point.

My 2013 535i is large and heavy for canyon runs but I go out on weekends with a group and this package worked pretty well and has not warped thus far. If anyone has questions ask away but I approve of R1 and Kevin was very helpful.

How is your set-up working out? I'm almost due for a brake job. Heard good things about R1. They seem popular with the Audi crowd.

Which rotor type did you go with? Solid cast or 2 pc. alu top hat?

This

I had some vibrations today under braking during some spirited driving so I think it is about time for me too. I've always been an OEM guy until I upgraded the brakes/rotors/calipers on my wife's 4Runner Limited. Once a year we tow our 5,000 pound boat (and toys) on a trailer w/no brakes to the outer Cape and it stops on a freaking dime. Amazing.

That thing is a beast!

Actually, now that I got the 535, my wife wants a "luxury SUV". I'm like, what about the $50k 4Runner?!? Hell, I'd love an X5 but there is no way it would tow the boat and it would get buried on the beach in no time.

So true. I derailed us so my bad!

To get back on topic, has anyone used the R1s? How does the cost and performance compare to OEM? Where are you sourcing them from? Sorry, I have done zero research on f10 brakes thus far but I need to!

I reached out to them awhile back but never went through with it

I went with R1 concepts drilled rotors and their ceramic pads a few months ago and have been very happy since. Highly recommended

I really wouldn't discount the X5 as far as boat towing compared to a 4Runner... The tow ratings are similar and the X5 would probably be quite a bit stiffer laterally, especially with runflats and the stiff sidewalls they have. We had an E70 X5 with the 4.8 and I would not hesitate pulling 6000lbs of boat with it properly equipped. The latest gen X5 may have gotten a bit softer, however.

That's fair. I shouldn't have said an X5 couldn't tow the boat. We had a Honda Pilot before the 4Runner and it handled the launch/pull at the beginning/end of the season okay. Not like the 4Runner though.

I guess the major limiting factor for the X5 is the soft sand on the beach. Then again, I could always get another Wrangler for that...

Update.

So after a couple more months, now for some reason I am getting bad vibrations from set up. I thought it was the bushings so I had that looked at by my mechanic he said their fine. Going to take it and have it inspected as stated by R1 to use the warranty.

Not sure if this car is too big for the set up but it's pretty bad.

That's not good man. That was a sizable chunk of change so I hope it works out.

I just read a bunch of reviews on the drilled/slotted R1 set up from another site. At best people were neutral, but most had nothing good to say. That's not what you want from what you would think it an upgrade.

When the time comes I don't think I'm taking any chances. I'll probably stick with OEM.

could it be your wheels causing the vibrations?

Only under braking, otherwise no shaking and it's in the steering wheel. Even my fiance said what the hell is that.

I'll get it inspected and get the report to them and maybe get the job slotted regular rotors. R1 Said it could be uneven brake wear but I installed everything at the same time and bedded everything in at the same time , why there would be uneven brake wear I have no idea

Yea it's better off staying with oem... all my bmws I had oem... but on my e60 I was tired of the brake dust so I went with zimmermann rotors and akebono because a lot of ppl were saying good things about them... the initial bite was not that great... I hated it and posted on the e60 forums... then some ppl said yea the initial bite was loss... if I knew that I would have never install them... lol

I used R1 concept rotors and Hawk pads last year on my E90 and man, those pads were amazing. It may have been your pad choice that is causing the vibration. The rotors at least on my E90 still looked brand new after 10-12k miles. That coating was great.

Which pads did you use whinojosa? I just submitted all my paperwork for them to give me a new set of rotors and pads I was thinking of going with their OP pads, one of their reps told me they are as close to stock as possible.

The stopping at high speeds is getting worse and on a car like this its just sad. Hoping that will fix the issue.

I just installed r1Concepts rotors and pads on all 4 corners. I used the Carly dongle to retract the rear parking brake actuator. So far no issues with about 5oo miles on them. I will update with any issues.

The guys at R1 helped me out and got me all 4 corners. When I get them I'm gonna replace all of them and hope everything is well again.

Sorry for the late response. I used Hawk HPS 5.0 for the front and unfortunately HPS+ for the rear due to a mistake in shipping. It ended up being a great combo and great pad! The initial bite was decent but the warmed up bite was powerful, predictable and very linear.
