Engine went into a stall during cold start

This morning when I start my engine the rev goes up and down for 5 sec then the engine went into a stall with no code. I restart the car and the rev goes up a little bit than everything go fine. It happen once awhile when the car is cold...! I already let the BMW service guy check but he said he can't do anything with no code. Anyone have any idea of what problem?

PS. mine is a 535i

Mine does the same thing from time to time, but it doesn't stall. I thought it was awfully odd for a brand new 5-series to have a bouncy cold-start idle. I haven't taken it in, yet.

I had that issue in my 535i for the first time last week. I have the 6MT. Cold start the 535i, clutch in, shifter in neutral... and it stalls out after about 5 seconds. Start it again, stalls out in about 5 seconds. After starting again, I gave it more gas and I was able to get going. Weird. But it only happened that one time.

It's not like I live in a cold climate or anything.

Potential repeat of HPFP issues (the one the 3-series used to have)?

Well its the same engine isn't it... N55 is still very prone to HPFP failures.

No.

It's pretty repeatable and only happens in certain patterns. No HPFP issues.

Mine takes longer to crank in the morning when its cold. But cold where I am is 40-50, nothing below. I hope its not an HPFP issue.

Who has actual evidence of HPFP issues with the F10? I've seen nothing of the kind.

So sorry to hit this thread again but I am having the exact same issue on my 2014 F10 550i. Did they ever fix it? What was the resolution?

Thanks

The bouncy idle is most likely the engine management software dropping into a routine to prevent the stall.

At some point, the predicted RPM thresholds are determined to be too low for continued operation, so the system calls another routine to stop the engine before the stall. This prevents hiccups like detonation.

Since the engine properly responded to the termination routines, no diagnostic codes are generated.

While no codes are left, the engine logs (accessible by BMW) may have some artifacts.

Now, if this same condition persisted multiple times, then you might see some codes.

I have experienced that, but only after i had the cold start deleted. There are no codes, but since the hpfp is a free-bee might as well see if that helps. Not likely, but fuel delivery when cold is suspect. Ive also noticed if i keep the rev to about 800-1000rpm for about 20-30 seconds before i take off the stall never happens. The warm up theroy.

Maybe your cold start is not working as intended??

I had this happen to me last weekend when the temperature drops below freezing at night. Wierd thing is that my car was in the garage and when I went to startup the car up in the morning and it wouldn't crank. Battery discharge came on so I turned off the car and tried a few minutes later. On the 4th try the car finally cranked over. Google around found that this happens a lot when the temps drops below freezing. Went on amazon and purchased a CTEK battery charger/trickle charger with recondition from amazon prime and got it the next day. I would recommend every member to get one for the winter.

I also found a technical service bulletin(tsb) on the issue. Just to let everyone know, tsb is not a recall but a issue that BMW knows about and trying to find a resolution for it. Here's a link to the tsb with the service bulletin number and summary.

There is a recall of the fuel pump as of Oct 2016 on certain 2011-2012 535 models and the symptom can be a stalling engine. There is not yet a solution issued. I've heard this means the redesigned pump has not reached dealers in the US yet. Keep an eye here to check if you qualify and for recall status:
