been watching a lot of youtube videos on this now. seems like a good idea. so as long you get one with a good baffle and probably with a clean look and not a mickey mouse type of install. gonna keep searching on a decent oil catch can that blends well with the engine bay. probably spending anywhere from $125-200. anyone have recommendations or links?

I just installed Dorch HPFP, car is at 50K miles, had Pure stage 1 at 20K, than Pure stage 2 at 35K, valves look pretty clean. I do full throttle everyday till 100-110mph. Don't need catch can.

I think Mishimoto has the only "direct-fit" N55 catch can. You have to look at the 1 and 3 series N55's.

Here is a video that explains the advantages for DI engines, another topic of discussion on this forum. As well, it reviews a 25 dollar can, a 100 dollar can, and the Mishimoto can! Good review.

I now know why on each intake I had build up on my values on one side, but not as much as the other... very interesting!

we noticed some oil in the intake when we were pulling things apart so that's what got me thinking about maybe doing a catch can. plus it would probably help lessen the amount of carbon build up on the valves

That was my idea. Install the catch can to lessen the build up. Then I figured if I decided to run a little intake valve cleaner from time to time, it would probably be more effective. The intake valve cleaners I have seen reviews on seem to work on small amounts of carbon deposits, but really struggle when the build up is substantial.

There is the link, that video explains why blow by creates build up.

Totally agree. You're gonna get blow by no matter what but if you can lessen the amount of contamination whether its fuel, oil and other crap from building on your valves why not?! Seems most videos all say the same thing so it sounds like a + to me

Well guys, let me know if you need any feedback from me on the $25 one I installed in my video? I think it is well worth it and it has been doing a good job of collecting blow by.

Sorry, I didn't realize the link wasn't included in the video description. I just added it.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

That is the catch can I purchased and installed. Yes, it does have the baffle design, however I don't believe I can remove it. I saw a video from another guy online, that seemed to have the same setup, but the baffle port could be unscrewed and he was able to insert additional material as a filter. I will double check mine again.

As a side note. As you can see from another review video here.
https://www.amazon.com/vdp/c7b469a0f..._OvibJXkrJL4Qd

The catch can does come with a extra "filter" (Looks like a scrubbing pad) that you can leave in the can for additional filtering. I'm currently running my can without it. Not sure if I will add it or not.

How often do you have to empty it out?

I bet the VVT Valve cover filter thing would help improve PCV as well...

I've only emptied it once, at about 1500 miles. I documented it in my Intake valve cleaning video. The container was a little over 1/3 full, but I know I was having an internal vacuum leak issue with the valve cover. We will see how that affects everything.

I remember I installed one on my 135i with an N54,

I thought N55s didn't need one, that issue was fixed with the new engine

Am i wrong?

Debatable... look at how much Johnson pulled out of his! I suppose "needed" is a strong word. It's needed in any car with blow by, so eventually we'll all "need" it.

I look at it as preventative - it won't hurt anything and if you get one with a vent it'll relieve unwanted pressure as well.

i definitely believe we need one after doing my VRSF cp install. i already ordered a catch can but i'm still waiting for it to be delivered from Amazon

How many miles do you have on yours? Have you pulled your intake mani to see how your valves look?

i have 100k on the odometer. Burrninja when he pulled the intake housing off notice some oil there too! we did pull off the intake manifold but i don't recall if we looked to see how the valves looked. when i pulled my cp off it also had oil as you can see. i'm sure at least putting the oil catch can should limit the amount of blow off vs leaving as is. anything helps really. at least that's the consensus from watching all those oil catch can reviews of whether it's a good idea to have them or not to have them
