530d MPG and running costs?

Just a question to those running a 530d. What are your running costs like? In particular real world MPG? Tyre/Brake wear?

Been tracking my 530d on Fuelly - if you wander round the site theres a few others registered .... mines lousy as I do very short journeys most days - the occasional longer run it ramps up very well ! Seen over 50 on a run to Wales ...

Only done 2.5K miles so too soon to comment on consumables, but the 'free service' aint due for another 16K miles - dunno how they make money any more ! (well .... )

I've just done a run to Newport and back today (around 250 miles on the M4) and it did 44.8 mpg. Around town its more like 34 mpg but really depends how you drive it - because of the additional power over the 2.0 litre, you do tend to get a bit heavy with the right boot occaisionally! If you're thinking of changing, trust me, you won't regret it - 530d for me all day long. But you should really get down toyour dealer and give both the 520 and 530 a go - they are completely different animals (by the way the 530d is VERY tail happy and loads of fun if you like that sort of thing (which obviously I do)!

Mpg from low 30s to mid 40s, depending on usage, about 37 overall
Front tyres 30,000, rears 18,000

Pretty good for such effortless performance!

Am reliably informed by someone senior at Jaguar that it costs them just £500 more to supply the 3.0d. I assume it's v similar with BMW. So that's about £9000 extra profit over the 2.0D then.....

Interesting, not a huge difference in the MPG (I only do 15 miles to work A/B and 8 miles on a motorway). But the residual on the 2.0d is miles better then the 3.0d.
Insurance for me is also £10 cheaper on the 3.0, which I found odd.

I've done 2500 miles since I got my 62 plate in November, I do a 20 mile each way commute each day of motorway and relatively quiet A roads and averaging 42 mpg over the last 1200 miles according to fuelly.

This does drop dramatically if you spend much time in stop start traffic.

If you can find the right one, I would go for a used 530d as I agree, the residuals are enormous. With the 530d, you also have to factor in the tax (£175 for the year) although I don't think you will notice a huge difference in town driving mpg between 530d to 520d. Where the 520d will come into its own is on the longer motorway journeys espcially with the eco-pro (which my one doesn't have). However, from a power perspective, they are completely different. I, like you, only do around 20 miles to work and back but for me, the extra power puts a smile on my face hence the reason I went for the 530d. As I bought just before Christmas, the deal was amazing (£31k off new price) and with extended BMW warranty to 2017. Had I gone with the 520d, I would certainly have brought new and specced exactly how I wanted it.

As I've not had mine all that long I'm just getting it into the usual work and back routine. I do 40 miles to work, 70% of that is M1 with the rest being A/B roads. My return journey is about 44 miles non of that is motorway (can't stand the M1 in the evening - J23 to 28!), all A/B roads. I'm now starting to see 40-41mpg not the 37-38mpg from when I first bought it. Car was on 34.5k miles when I purchased so it's well 'run in'.

I think I will stick with my ordered 520d, I have no need for the extra power - even though I got nearly £12k knocked off a new 530d M Sport.

I've got a 525D with the 3.0 engine and cant understand how I get similar mileage but a deficit of 40odd HP (I couldn't afford a 530 at the time and got a cracking deal)
I manage 32 admittedly often on very short runs on back roads when engine hardly gets to temperature.
I can get 40 if driving like a saint on motorway (but frankly whats the point!!!)
average is 34-35mpg and find OBC is pretty accurate.
Thinking of chipping engine and love to see if that helps mpg as suppliers often claim.

I have a May 2013 F11 520d (manual gearbox) with about 8k miles on it now.

Used for mixed motoring including long motorway journeys at or close to 70mph and it'll return an average in the mid 40s

Recently, 190miles of short in town. Stop start driving, cold starts and barely getting warm returned only 24mpg (real). Ouch !

Then this weekend a run down to London (with family and luggage) and back (360+ miles) and its showing 56.2mpg (indicated). Probably around 53mpg real.

Cant complain about that. But could do with a smaller town car to get round the backstreets.

Was even wondering about an i3, but it'll take months to even get a test-drive !

But for a long distance car it can't be beaten. Smooth powerful comfortable quiet and roomy. Whats not to like….

I reset the journey computer last Monday morning and checked it on Friday evening. Over 426 miles to work and back all week I managed 43.8mpg. After running about over the weekend it dropped to 42mpg. I'm happy with that though.

530d for my money offers amazing economy / pace I average 43 mpg using Eco pro mode when in lines of traffic and full bore where possible with the caveat that I have 9 points. As pointed out tail out antics are effortless as is A to B pace. The qualities of this engine never cease to amaze me including aurally ( no contest to 520d ) and that is coming from a staunch petrol head !

At the end of the day we all impose budgets on our purchases. If that wasn't the case we'd all be driving M5's.

For me, as much as I would have liked the 530d or 535d, I'd set a limit on what I was prepared to put down as a deposit, pay on a monthly basis and also, I didn't want a GFMV that was a monster bullet in case for whatever reason I decide to keep the car at the end of the term.

Having said all that, if you were purely comparing the 530d and 520d based on the data that's cropping up, your right the 530d isn't that much a different proposition.

Lets be honest, driving a diesel is a compromise, we'd all rather be in a V8 (as an ex 550i owner). I'd therefore feel cheated losing 5-6mpg driving a 530d compared to my 525d (4cyl twin turbo). Ok, 4 cyl isn't great when cold in and around town, but once above 15mph it's still very refined and the car is quite a bit lighter than the 530d which is a bonus, doesn't feel as front heavy.

I also prefer the power delivery with the twin turbo setup, less turbo lag, so it has to be a 525d or 535d for me!
