Catted v. Catless
Pros & Cons of both? Prefer to hear from those with N63/tu cars, but open to all. Just curious to hear you all out.

When I was looking into dps when I had my e82 it seemed that even the expensive catted pipes overtime threw a cel because the material would break down. So essentially they became cat less and were double the price. I think most people go catted due to not wanting the smell also. Personally I would rather go catless and get the gains and the smell wouldn't bother me that much.

Went AA Catless on my n63. Don't regret it one bit. The sound is just insane, turbos hiss like I have a snake in the exhaust and the performance is great too. Only con is CEL and smell, that's but definitely worth the sound and performance.

Catless give you more power, louder exhaust
Catted sound is more refined and no fuel smell As long as you get proven and high quality downpipes, you will only smell fuel when the car is on idle for a while Smell will be on the outside only .. If you smell is inside the car, you probably have a leak

The smell is the only reason I didn't get down pipes. I would be all over pipes if that wasn't the case. Wife would give me an earful too plus I would want to drone in the car to say low as well.

On the n63tu you can get over 500 wheel and torque on stock DP's with a flash tune. On my 6cyl I have to have a DP to get the most out of mine, you don't.
As soon as you go catless your car is less BMW like and the gas fumes can give you headache at long idles. To me the sound of a DP is less desirable and if your looking for quality sound get a great muffler. Still, there are hp and throttle response gains in a DP minus the cel / smell. A good flash will permanently eliminate the cel, but not the smell.

Bmw doubles I'm really on the fence about this upgrade because I agree with you and want my car to remain a BMW. I would like the extra power while maintaining the experience inside the car. Drone and smell are the 2 main reasons I haven't done the upgrade. If I did, I would probably lean towards a catted DP with the coating. I've received feedback from users here with the catted DP and they still say there is a smell. What are your thoughts on a catted pipe and which do you have?

If you want a BMW still in my opinion, go for the catted pipes. Add Meth to compensate for power loss. lol
I dont mind a gas smell on my old 1974 Z28 that I owned (Remember transformers? Mine was that car but white with black stripes and nicer paint). There comes a balancing point with these cars. Do you want a track car that goes the fastest it can, but smells, roars like a 70's side pipe Corvette and races around like a rice burner? Or do you want a luxury German piece of art that Purrs and Smokes 90 percent of the cars on the road? Another words a daily driver which is a sleeper. No offense to anyone that likes the loud exhaust or deals with gas smell, it is just ones preference. I personally like the Car to retain German characteristics. |
