Limp Mode After Pull
Hello everyone, i own a 2012 550i x drive, started my car and let it sit for a bout a minute or 2 today then drove about a mile and a half up the road, i then did a pull from ~15mph to around 100, where i was greeted with drivetrain malfunction and limp mode, as well as the check engine light, i drove the small distance home and turned off the car, let it sit for 5 mins and turned back on, no limp mode no malfunction no CEL, drove the short 3/4 mile drive to work and back with 0 issues. my question is what went wrong? why did this happen and fix itself so fast, and is there some sort of damage done to my car? i know this is a VERY broad error code however i didn’t know if anyone had any insight. ANY help at all is appreciated
car has 60k miles as far as i know it was family owned before me i have done multiple pulls in the car with 0 issues, however baby it for the majority |

So you ripped on it with a cold motor? You do that a lot on this car?

it was actually about 3.5 miles before i turned around and did the pull, and no i usually give it even more time than that, since this incident i’ve done 135 and 100 a few times with 0 issues, however in a low gear i will notice an occasional stutter or “bump” feeling similar to limp mode when accelerating, but it always goes away within 5 seconds or so, and this was occurring before putting the car in limp mode

In general, I try to keep my rpms below 4k until I get to engine operating temp. (and that usually takes about 20 mins or so. Transmission oil operating temp even longer). Then I may or may not get my ya yas out, depending upon the day. OP: Check for Error Memory Codes and that my give you some insight as to what happened and when. Also, some unsolicited personal advice, you'll have much more success with the longevity of your engine/transmission if you allow it to warm up to operating temps before you lay your foot into it. Good Luck! |

Misfire during full throttle was coil related with my 330ci. Id go with that in this instance as well, and according to your description. If it was me i'd replace them (assuming yours are original and/or aged)
