aFe Intake System for the 550i Finally!!!

Guys,

Its been a long long super long wait for an intake system to be developed for our cars.

The time has coming and coming soon. AFE has come through for us!!!

I reached out to aFe almost a year ago and a few weeks ago I got an email from them about how the developer is interested and just needs to get an approval from the CEO and today I got an email back and they are going thru with the design.

My car will be spending some time with aFe for testing.

Email I received today confirming that the process is starting:

Combat does it again!!!

I will say this, please don't ask me a million questions. The above information and the Screen shot I've attached is all I know.

So price, time frame, etc is still not available to me.

Cheers to all!

He said it will start shipping in the beginning of the 3rd quarter.
But should have lots of design, dyno, pics, videos well before then.

Id be willing to bet Bad Blacks design will likely perform better with cooler air simply because its not an airbox style design with a much more direct line to the turbos. That being said, it obviously wont be shielded from the elements and the sacrifice is the strut braces, but to some, power is more important and driving in the elements isn't a concern. If he makes it a solid design with no negative effects to the computer, it will be a solid design that will be awesome for us warm weather folk as most airbox designs have the unfortunate issue of severely heat soaking in the summer and causing sky high IAT temps.

This is great news! Maybe this will get other companies like injen to jump aboard as well! I'm going to agree with bad black though. The intake that he and gclions have been working on will probably be out the gate first.

Exactly what I was going to say, your intake will most likely be out before them.

Can't wait to see dyno numbers and more videos.

Last I checked they were working on it.
I would say 3 weeks ago.

They told me they started working on it and will be done @ the end of the 3rd quarter early 4th.

The 550i air filters are placed to the rear of the engine so an intake would heat soak like crazy due to it being right next to the cats. Badblack had the right idea with putting the filters through the grills. There is virtually no room in the front to place a filter either.

I think the afe intake will be a play on badblack's design or a sealed cone system like their enclosed n54 intake to keep the engine cover intact.

I'm only guessing though. It will be nice to get some intake options for this platform. Badblack has shown gains in real world conditions with just his custom k&n panel filter solution.
