Phone mounting options?

I'm trying to find a practical phone mount that neither obscures a big part of the dash, nor risks impact to/from a knee when stuck on one side or the other of the centre console (eg Brodit). Has anyone come up with any bright ideas for mounting a mob phone? If it makes any difference I'm using a note 3 - cheers!

This is my solution to exactly the problem you are having. I was not happy with the brodit mounts for the same reason. I use this:

http://www.carcommunications.co.uk/c...ies-f1011-2010

Then i use the brodit cradle attached to it. You have to remove the front of the dash area and zircon to screw the mount it (but its easy) and once its in, its solid. I've wired a USB cable from the mount back behind the dash and under the centre console and to the USB socket in the armrest.

Once installed, everyone thinks it looks almost stock and does not obscure any part of the dash or get hit with any knees etc.

Thanks for the reply, I've seen these but was worried it could 'kneecapitate' any passengers?

As a temporary measure I've butchered a Brodit mount from my old 3 series (right hand dash fitting), it's not perfect and needs hard wiring but it does the job for the moment. The headlight switch is obscured somewhat, but it's still accessible and doesn't inconvenience me as I seldom change it from auto.

no it should be ok in the current position, the picture is misleading, mine is much higher, near the horizontal trim strip above the glove box etc. I don't know if i installed mine incorrectly but I think i remember using a screw higher than the one they recommended and it still fit fine, and was even further away from the passengers knees, and was in a better viewing position in my opinion. Ill try attach a pic if i get to my car soon

Why do you need to mount the phone at all if it connects by Bluetooth?

What am I missing?

well one reason is that I like to see the phones display but mainly it's so i can use the apps like spotify, deezer etc over USB, so as soon as the phone goes in the cradle, it connect to usb (and charges) and I can see it as a second "display" in the car. Mainly though its for app use and a convenient place to put it. If i just used it for Bluetooth applications then yeah, mounting it might be unnecessary but i don't.

Despite having Pro Nav I tend to use TomTom on the phone for routing as it usually suggests more sensible routes.

I also have a speed camera alert app which I usually run, and before the speed camera police shoot me down, I endeavour not to speed but I still prefer to be warned of cameras.

I don't have 'OFFICE' so I don't get access to emails other than on the phone, neither can I reply to texts, I don't mind stopping to read / answer but, mounted properly, I don't have to faff around getting the phone as I can read and answer directly from where it's mounted.

I use a Nokia CR-123. It attaches to the windscreen and i have it on the right hand side of the instrument cluster. Very stable and perfect for iphones as its fully adjustable.

Interesting.

I too use Tomtom (on a Nexus 5) because Pro Nav + RTTI just is not good enough by quite a long way. I use a decent quality vent mount on the right hand side of the cluster, but that Nokia looks good. Can you get a charging cable in - on the bottom edge right in the centre?

The Nokia does look interesting and ripe for a little modifying, can you grab a couple of pictures of the holder in situ and with phone attached, cheers

Yes, the bottom mount is open to allow a usb or apple lightning through.

I think I'd rather have mine lower, so it doesn't obscure the view out of the windscreen.

Cheers, I'm torn now, I think the Nokia gives us what is probably the most user friendly mounting position I've seen in an F10, yet I'm with Pottsy, and hate to have anything obscuring the windscreen, even a little corner like that!

In practise I don't notice it there as it doesn't really obsure anything other than the top of the dash. For me being at that level I don't need to drop my eyes to see the screen.

did you see mine above? It seems to fit your requirements, it is the most convenient, and least obstructive of all i looked at

Yes I did thanks, I see you're using a Brodit active mount, where have you taken the power from?

Hi sorry I didn't see this reply before.

Yes the power goes into the dash under the metal trim (you can still squeeze it all back together with the cable running into it) and then under the centre console and back to the USB port in the arm rest. I had to remove the metal cover on the centre console but it could probably be achieved with smaller fingers and a coat hanger.
