343M OEM Wheels ON 550 Xdrive safe or not
So I put on some mint 343M wheels and tires from an M5 onto my Xdrive 550. I've been reading 245/285 is the best and I can agree because I ran them on my previous car. My issue is that I need to replace 2 tires on my previous setup so in the mean time I'm running the 265/295 setup that is OEM from the M5. I have run 100 miles so far with no codes or real issues.
I do feel the car getting a bit squirmy when I'm on uneven roads. I just want to make sure I am not going to ruin the transfer case in the few weeks I have to wait for my new tires. Any insight would be great. If I have to I'll just rent a car for a few weeks. |

after 300 miles... conclusion Never run this setup on a Xdrive!!!!!
I put my 245/285 set up on today with the M5 wheels and life is back to normal. The previous setup was most defiantly throwing a few things off. Uneven roads you could feel some of the tires breaking loose or the traction control trying to take over excessively. I concluded if I ran this any longer my transfer case would be toast. I hope this little trial didn't set me up for any long term issues. maybe if someone could chim in on that. |

as already mentioned in this forum, for xDrive the "healthiest" setup is when the tire diameter between rear and front wheels does not exceed 1%, or should be less than 1%.
I have a similar dilemma with my future wheel/tire setup but as long as the 1% rule is being followed, there shouldn't be any issues with the transfer box. 20" wheels the M5 setup on a non-M5 w/ xDrive is defenitely too risky. F/R: 265/295: tire diameter difference 1.15% various options: F/R: 245/275: tire diameter difference 0.88% [BMW OEM (also for xDrive)] F/R: 255/285: tire diameter difference 0.88% almost identical tire diameter/circumference: F/R: 245/285: tire diameter difference 0% (perfect) F/R: 255/295: tire diameter difference 0% (perfect) https://www.rimsntires.com/specspro.jsp |

What is crazy was that 1.15% was way too much in my opinion. Makes me really worried about under inflated tires or tread wear on tires. I should have done the math in my head 255/295 does work. I let those tires go, wish I kept them because that extra beef was nice. |

the 265/295 is simply too risky for xDrive and its components. I would say a "No-Go", definitely.
245/285 or 255/295 are the two perfect setups particularly when carrying xDrive. But 255/285, which might be the setup for my summer wheels, is also acceptable (as mentioned above) Personally, I agree with you in terms of beefy tires on wheels. Wouldn't go for strechted tires as long as I have an option to avoid it. |
