Now here comes the difference in ability, as they have different features and I like both for different reasons, some of which may apply to you. the E-tronic allows not only the increase of boost, just like every other piggy back, but also allows you to choose where the boost is increased by RPM since it has a crank trigger signal. Why is this beneficial? simple... People get obsessed with dyno numbers and only seem to think "more is better" without understanding why you want power in certain areas, what that power does to the car and benefits of a tuned power curve. Lets start with the "more is better" theory. As ive also stated (and has been proven by dynos) the 535 engine is out of steam at about 5800 rpm... no matter how much boost you try to crank out of the turbos, they always fall on their face because they physically are at their limits of pushing air without increasing turbo capacity. What does increase every time you wick the turbo up more is the "torque spike" which comes from the turbo wastegate staying closed as long as possible and making as much boost as possible. If you look at multiple different 535i dynos using the piggy backs, you will notice theres just a huge surge of torque as soon as the turbo gets cooking, and then it falls back off... this causes all sorts of problems that very few people look into, specifically detonation from too much boost/timing and lack of octane. If you look at some of the nice graphs from properly dyno tuned cars, they have a lot smoother power delivery and correct timing so you get all the power without the danger of detonation, wheel spin, knock retard, traction control etc. Where im going with this is simple, certain areas of your powerband may respond better to increased boost while others dont, so being able to add say 2 lbs down low, 3 in the middle, and then as much as possible up top would greatly benefit you from a safety standpoint, traction (if youre not an X drive), and also make everything live a lot longer. As far as other benefits of the Etronic - you can also add or subtract boost at the push of a button, and store 3 separate maps which can be changed at any time as well as individually modified with boost settings in case you want to run race fuel. In addition, if you desire to go back to stock temporarily, you can replace the piggy back with the terminator plug that reconnects all the harnesses to stock. Lastly, the overall quality of the e-tronic is light years ahead of the JB4. The JB4 does have the nice feature of deleting codes if you have a downpipe or other issue causing a fault code

hmm, I had the ESS tune on my e60 550. even they only claimed an additional 12 hp, but the power delivery was vastly improved. the car was wicked. nice explanation fenix

I'm seriously considering this tune over the JB4 at this point. I just wish there was more users with feedback.

Why would u consider another piggyback ? The only great piggyback is JB4 that is even used with Flash Tuned stack these days.

@FSociety (I love that name) The JB4 is proven but I've seen it throw a number of check engine lights on multiple users cars and that's got me down on the unit. Reading up on the company's other mods and custom tunes they offer is making me consider the unit without any user data or feedback. I'm all for spending a little extra (but not Dinan) on my BMW. I don't see myself stacking tunes and I just want something that's going to give me a nice smooth jump in power without problems. Plus I'm that guy who goes left when everyone is headed right sometimes.
