Question Best Tune for N63 Engine!

Hello everyone, I have a 2013 550i and are looking into getting a tune to make this beautiful sleeper into an even greater beast on the inside! The problem is that there being a wide variety tunes, I don't know which one to choose!! I see so many being mentioned on this forum such as Shifttech, Dinan, BMS, active autoworker, Mission Performance, Racechip, etc. but I don't know which is worth it. My primary concern is reliability. I realize that their is a risk with practically any tune due to the fact that the engine may not be capable of handling extra power but what are your experiences with tunes. Which tune is likely to be reliable and keep my car running healthy for a long time and not beat the engine past its limits. After reliability, I am looking for the one that will give me the most performance!!! I realize that their may have to be compromise between how much performance a tune will give me and how reliable it will be but what are your recommendations. In other words which is the best tune out there! Thanks for your responses!

BMS is the best bet for piggyback solution. Especially with the new JB4 for N63 coming out.

The only viable flash tune option is with Eurocharged but there's no reviews on them yet (companies like Mission aren't spending time for the N63)

Dinan would obviously be very safe but also has a very poor hp/money factor compared to something like BMS. A lot of us have run the old S2 from BMS for a long time and have had no issues.

I actually started hearing good things about eurocharged now. You are right about the new JB4 version coming out I am actually thinking about it.

I have Racechip Pro 2 installed on my 2013 550xi and it's a monster now. Pulls from 0-130 and still wants more. No issues off the stock setting so far and really don't have a reason to bump up the power. I'm an outside salesman and drive about 2000 miles a month. Car runs like a champ! Would recommend it to anyone. The car does shift a little more aggressively but the 550 transmission can handle the torque. Good luck!

One other thing. I purchased the chip new on eBay for much less from the German Racechip site. They were great to deal with and I paid 1/3 the price!

Definitely, I have some very good friends who are partnered with them and have all had good experiences. I just haven't seen anyone post about the N63 flash yet. If you see any reviews let me know, I want to check it out!

Comes down to this... Car under warranty and never want to see a light on the dash? Then it is Dinan. Stage 5 flash with all the other goodies will yield 587 foot lbs of torque on paper at least. Dinan will not make your car the absolute fastest, but you will have more power than a stock M5 and the car will always be reliable and not throw codes.

Cheaper route and not worried about resetting Check engine lights sometimes would be the BMS stage 2 piggy back, go with M5 exhaust or Dinan mufflers, Badblack intake or Dinan intake (Dinan uses forced air induction in conjunction with stock intake) and then the only people who make larger intercoolers for the N63 is Dinan. Shop ebay and the forums and you can get the Dinan part much cheaper than retail. Keep in mind, intercooler and intake from Dinan took me 40 hours of labor to install.

Reliability
Most proven tune is the Jb4

Power
All tunes mentioned will give you noticeable power and most of them can be adjusted for more power if thats what you need. I would not be too worried about that just make sure you get an adjustable tune like the JB4 or a flash

We offer 14 days money back guarantee on the JB4, give it a try

I am looking at purchasing a JB4 from someone who sold his car. Does that mean that I may be getting an older version and there's no way to update them unless you get the newest one?

You could be getting an old version. There are 3 versions out currently. Stage 1, Stage 2, and JB4 beta. If you purchase stage 1 or 2 used it will cost you $350 about to upgrade to the latest version and you will have to send your board in.

Guys,

Is the BMS stage 1 the only tune that is easily reversible? I know BMS stage 1 is like 40hp, but Racechip and others, what's the install like and power gains?

How does sending the board in work and what's the turnaround time?

You order the new replacement board then mail back your old board and original receipt to Burger (just use the address they sent it from or on their website). When they receive it they refund you.

So you can wait until you get the new one, you just don't get the core charge back until they receive your old board.

Tough call, the JB4 is much more advance now and complex install but there's benefit for it (power, datalogging) etc.

But in terms of BMS Stage1 vs RaceChip then thats a different story.

Since you're in PA hit up @Eurodynamic @CBTuningeuro (Their Instagram pages) to see what they can do for your car.

Looks like RaceChip has a 5% off summer sale... $645 out the door for nearly 100hp on the N63? I am really a noob to the tuning world for v8TT.... My E60 wasn't even worth tuning and I have had that for over 10 years (still have it)!! Is this too good to be true???

I know some Audi/VW folks from 15 years ago were hot to trot here, turning up boost. Is RaceChip good to go? Their marketing department seems to be doing a bang up job simplifying the purchase!

I can see you are a staunch supporter of Race Chip. Maybe even affiliated with the US distributor? ; - )

I like the concept and I know in Europe its popular. I've only seen 2-3 members talk about RC that's all... even fewer with N63s... more really on N55s.

RE $600... who's selling it for that? RC-USA is $645 for Ultimate for N63 550i.

And a E60 525i... that was not worth tuning... the story around that purchase will require some scotch and a nice roaring fire...to comfort me on a catastrophic buyers remorse.
