I believe it's hydraulic if it has AD &/or integral active steering but otherwise it's electric. See realoem.com for more...

i thought the only 5 series with hydraulic steering are the xdrives ones (left hand drive only) and the M5.
happy to be corrected but will bet 20pence on that!

535d is EPS, only the xDrive Fives (and M5) have HPAS.

The hydraulic pump, etc., shown in RealOEM, is for the ARS (Active Roll Stabilization) feature, part of Adaptive Drive.

Mines hydraulic. You can tell because when the stop/start nonsense kicks in you have to wait a fraction of a second before you can turn the wheel. Or is that not a good enough test?

Are you sure? There is no hydraulic steering listed for the RWD 550i.

Put your VIN in RealOEM and bring up the parts.

Actually having done 30 seconds actual research, it turns out that EPS doesn't work unless the engine is running. So my intuitive test is bollocks. As such I don't know what I have so am inclined to believe it is electric. Still, I have learned something and saved a few quid on my next service

Garage List
Easiest way to check is open the bonnet and see if it has a black power steering fluid resoviour.

Look at expert highland pete all over it...

Um... where is that I not sure I ever opened my hood. ( I know. V Sorry )

Hm, well about the X5 , it certainly does not feel heavy as mine in either the F15 or the E- erm, old one.

The M5 is about the same as mine, if not a fraction lighter.

Hm.
