All I can say is WOW what a difference. I purchased an entire M5 exhaust system but I had the shop limit the work to replacing the mufflers and replacing the center muffler with the M5 xpipe. I was going to start with mufflers only but it is such a PIA to be without a car that I decided to just go for it.

This mod totally changes the car. It sounds lie a V8 beast and not a Buick sedan. I drove the car home about 20 miles. I did not notice any drone in the cabin. I DID hear the exhaust at cruising speeds but just barely. In short, my fears of excessive drone while cruising were unfounded. Now, WOT is a different story. The exhaust is loud at WOT. Car sounds mean.

Thanks to Lancaster and others for the exhaust and the advice. I highly recommend this mod to anyone looking to improve sound without breaking the bank.
what did it run you?

$900 for the system shipped. Not sure on install but I'm guessing $200 to $300. Haven't received the bill yet.

@clerkpalmer

Why not just have the entire M5 3'' diameter exhaust installed?

Glad to hear your impression is good.

My M5 Competition Sport exhaust will be here in about 10 days. Shame I won't have my car until September!!

I will also def be installing the exhaustmeister.

Good question. While I have heard different things on this forum, the shop seemed to indicate a complete system replacement would require some heavy lifting. The shop is owned by my buddy and they are a good shop but they are not a muffler shop per se and here in pittsburgh they are few and far between. He told me the exhausts do not line up perfectly Msport to M5 so I asked them to focus on the mufflers and the xpipe.

On a down note, someone at the shop clearly curbed the underside of the front spoiler when they had the car. Infuriating. I am super anal about that and checked it before I brought the car in. Scrapes aren't really visible from the top but man that just eats at your insides particularly since I had the entire bumper repainted a month ago!

Ok. I am having a place called Fabspeed do mine. They are a custom high end exhaust shop. They do all Porsches, Lamborghini, Ferrari, etc...
I am hoping it's not TOO bad considering they charge 125 an hour!

Dude... That sucks about your front lip. Just try to remember... It's only a car... And as long as it's not your garage queen, toy, custom show car.... Then do the best to just go with the flow. I used to be SUPER anal. But for my daily driver... I can't waste the energy on being crazy about it.

Best of luck fellow PA guy.

My guess is a high end shop in Philly can handle this easily. Couple hours I would guess. You are going to love the transformation. As for the scrapes, if they didn't do it I would have soon enough. And if I didn't the wife clearly would have. Such is life.

That's it brother... It is what it is.... Good attitude.

Are you considering the exhaustmeister? I think it will be great to have control over the loudness.

Doing the full exhaust takes a but more because of the connection to the downpipes. Don't think it's a perfect bolt right in , in 10 min type of effort. But if they're going to cut and weld, that probably takes equally as long. I would do the full system if you have it.

@scott135i

My thought is they could cut the flanges off both the M5 and the stock 550 exhaust systems at the head-end where they bolt to the DP's… and then simply re-weld the 550 flanges to the M5 exhaust system.

Ultimately, I will tell them I want to use the entire M5 exhaust and 'just make it happen'. Hopefully that won't mean an un-godly number of hours.

But oh well… even if it does… heck, I got the exhaust for no cost!

Glad I found this thread. There way too few aftermarket exhaust items for our glorious 550i's, and this is what, 1/3 the cost of the DINAN system or just about? I definitely will be doing this upgrade as I totally agree, this car is way too damn quiet for the beast that lurks under the bonnet.

My exhaust shop did it in 8 hrs including M5 down pipe install 3" mandrel bent all the way through with x-pipe to M5 mufflers. Sounds like a M5.
