still amazed at the economy of the 530d and performance

I'm still amazed at how economic the 530d can be and at the same time when you put your foot down, how fast this is.
It is a significant improvent over my previosu E39 530i msport. Typical gentle motorway joutney would get 35mpg and its 0-60 was 7.6 seconds.

Enlosed a photo, showing a trip lasting nearly an hour. average is 58.4 mpg (uk gallons). I saw 62mpg just as I pulled off the motorway.

At the same time, now tha the car is weel and truly run on (2700 miles) I put my foot to the floor and its just so incredibly quick, you are literally pushed back in your seat .
This is a 530d which gets to 60 in 6.0 seconds dead (258 hp engine) so those of you have the more powerful engines I can only imagine what those are like!

I'd suggest the car is far from run in. Most diesels take at least 20,000 miles to give their best mpg and performance.

Have you ever checked your mpg against a true brim to brim measurement? My 520d overread by about 6 to 7% until I correct the computer.

My car is now close to 10k and I had a 'very' fast dash to Hertfordshire and back this morning and I averaged 42MPG on that run, very impressive considering the speeds.

My 330d was ace! (245ps) I could go absolutely mental in it and it would never show me anything less than 43mpg!
Although I can achieve 40mpg at a push in my 328i, as soon as I want a little fun, I've never seen the average economy drop as quickly.

a900ss,
why does it take 20000 miles before it gives it best?
Manual says 1200 miles before you start to increase revs.

Garage List
Interresting, I would say a 535D would consume 20% less than the 535i, still I am seriously considering ditching diesels next time. I have spent two days city driving and I am tired of the dieselsound.

Well this is my first diesel and I can see what you mean, these are good cars and whilst it is obviousl its a diesel at tickover, its not intrusive onvce you're on the move but in terms of refinement , yeh agree its never going to be the same as a petrol.
I'm still very pleased with mine compared to the 530i E39 I used to have, although that was in my opinion a very good engine indeed.
I do like the low down torque and teh fact that it revs very low and the power is avialable straight away.
Plus the fact i don't have to go into a 'petrol' station as often as I used to!

Don't get me wrong, you can give it the full beans now, no problem. However the engine will still loosen up and give up even better mpg and performance over time. Diesels take a lot longer than petrols to fully loosen up.

They are pretty much run in after a couple of thousand miles but they will still loosen up even more over time. My last 530d the engine really loosened up and became more free reving at around 17-20k miles.
