Compared to the GT the new Audi

(2011) A8 did not blow me away. I was expecting great things but again the GT shows it merrits by being able to compete in out-right luxury with a car that is positioned in a class higher. The new interior of the A8 is nice, the most impressive being the nav interface allowing you to write with your finger - the first characters of an address along with selecting radio station presets when not using the nav. The plastics of the velvet beige interior in the car I drove were not what I expected, addtionally the car I drove did not have the brushed alluminum back lit buttons arond the clock on the center stack. The buttons were black plastic - just like you would find on a Jetta or GTI. I assume the early production models may be experienceing supplier issues or perhaps its an option?

Panoramic roof on the L model is nice - both sides open, albeit the rear only tilts up. Interior volume in front seems a bit narrower than the GT, as my legs easily impact the drivers door on the left and the center transmission tunnel on the right. Speaking of transmission, the gear selector is even more touchy than the gear lever in our bimmers. Going from drive to reverse its all too easy to go straight to park or vice versa. The actuation however, follows a similar concept to BMW's shifter.

DI 4.2 V8 runs strong, stronger than I expected, while the engine/exhaust sounds good as well. 8 speed transmission - like ours -shifts quick and seamlessly. Handling is flat and confident, in the dry the new quattro AWD system pretty much mimicks a conventional rear drive sedan.

All in all the A8 is a very nice car, some might question the comparison, but the GT like its elder siblings F01/F07 can be compared to the A8; on space, luxury, technology, drivetrain, performance, and depending on option levels - price. To some a fairer comparision will be the A7. But the A7 as I understand it, will be strictly a four seater, and only available - at least initially with diesel power and various V6's.

Just my two cents
