Post Questions, questions,questions!!

I’m looking to purchase a 5series with the F10 body style, focusing on the years 2010 to 2014 with a manual transmission. I really like that body style and it’s the last time frame a 5series was available with a stick. It is not an easy car to find. The few that I have come across have had quite a bit of mileage. One even had almost 150,000. My question is to anyone who has or had a 5 series of that particular vintage. What are some of the things I should look out for. What are some of the things that should’ve been replaced at that point. Should I avoid a car with mileage that high? Basically, what’s the good the bad and the ugly that car.

Hi db303! The F10s with manual transmission are all N55 535i cars. I'm an N52 (non-turbo) sort of a guy, but the basics hold true: Get a car with records and no deferred maintenance! Higher mileage is (mostly) fine as long as the previous owner has kept up on everything. The big problems will be oil leaks (easy, moderate, hard fixes), water pump/hoses, and fuel pump. Then basic stuff every car needs like suspension, brakes, tires, etc. If those things have been address, even if a ways back, IMO you'll be fine. Newer is better with the N55, so if you can get a '14 or '15, paying more for it is a good investment. Look for private party sale or a Euro/BMW specialty seller. Yeah, you'll pay more but you might get more than random car on the used car lot.

BTW, if you can live with a smaller car and don't mind the older looks and lack of tech, consider a 335i from 2011. All the same problems as above, but you will have a much larger community to support you in keeping it going! Plus mechanical power steering vs. electronic PS which provides a much better feel. I was kinda' looking for a MT 535i, but came to the conclusion that a 335i would be better for me if it came down to it.
