Replace battery
I got home today turned off the engine and got a 'You may continue driving. Replace battery as soon as possible'. Car is exactly 3 years and 1 month old. Is it normal? Admittedly as it's my daily driver and the office is about 1.5 miles from home I don't charge it much during the week, but on weekends I do 100 miles or so. Twice per year I charge the battery on a CTEK charger .
I have a comprehensive maintenance contract which does include battery replacement, but I am afraid the dealership may try to pull the 'you didn't drive enough miles' trick. Any clue on how to respond if they do? Thanks. |

Yes, but I don't have a garage so it's a bit difficult. Anyhow, I went to the dealer today they read the FOB and said that I don't drive the car sufficiently (he said they see about 100 miles a week). The guy said that ideally I should charge it manually once a week. I have the car hooked up to the charger now. The dealer says the error will go away but a fault will be stored. I'm still hesitant - does 'Replace battery' mean it's just low on charge or does it mean it's dead? Because if it's dead I can charge it all I want it won't keep charge... I don't want to be stuck somewhere

Yes, I have comfort access, but the FOB is nowhere near the car.
So I left the charger overnight (CTEK MXS 5.0, AGM mode). It was on trickle charge in the morning. Still the same message. I dug out my OBD reader and I get: - 12.2-12.3 V with ignition on - 13.8V with the engine idling - so the alternator is working So I guess the battery is dying. Off to the dealer again... |

To update - battery replaced under maintenance.
Think they also updated the software in the car - the digital fuel consumption indicator has a slight 3D feel to it (orange line on the top), the nav voice sounds crisper and all my iDrive favorites and contacts are gone - also some settings were reset. Or is this normal during a battery replacement and I am just imagining things? ;-) [Yep, definitely updated - I'm now on TX/MX 3.x on the combox. Good news I guess] Last edited by Breach; 04-15-2014 at 06:46 PM.. |
