I live in NYC. My MPG is at 11-12mpg. Is this normal??? I only have about 800 miles on the car so far. I don't push it hard except for every once in a while, however all of the driving in New York is stop and go constantly. Anyone else getting figures this low? I also have DHP on my car if that makes a difference.
Thanks |

You don't buy a V8 for fuel economy. City driving will easily get you in the 10-15 mpg range. The highway miles have always been 20+ mpg on my car. I wouldn't be too concerned of any issues. Check your tire pressure and air filters to squeeze that extra mpg out.

I get about 18mpg combined, I do 60/40 Highway.
Someone here did post about the Diverted Valve being cracked and when he fixed it his MPG went up.

I'm getting ~21 mpg with mostly highway driving. I'm hoping it gets a little higher as the engine breaks in (but certainly not expecting much since I didn't buy a monster V8 for good gas mileage).

Im in Nassau county/Queens area and I have an M5. I do drive to Stamford for work and I get about 16mpg. you should be getting a bit more than me.
if your car is brand new, this might be normal for now. wait until you get pass break in period and your first old change to see if your consumption goes up. |

Yes, your in NYC, lots of stop and go, x-drive, and a v8 engine. I live in an urban area and I get about 18 in the city, and 30 on the highway, unless im going 80mph, then Im getting about 27. Over all mpg is now 22.4, but that's after a road test. I have not reset my computer in 2000 miles. Sport, vs. comfort and eco will also have a big factor as well has how you drive. You have a powerful car and no doubt fun to have!

I have carefully studied this phenomenon over the years. BMWs get better economy after 10,000 miles and again at ~30,000 miles. Also, if you baby the car, you're doing yourself a major disservice for fuel economy and oil consumption. The x50 is a monster. Drive it safely, but like you stole it. Finally, the engine management system---I am convinced---has a break in program---that improves reliability at decreased economy. |

Saturday, 6/18/16, I purchased a 2012 550 x-drive in Dallas and immediately drove it home to Austin. Avg. highway fuel economy was 27+mpg. I was expecting lower and pleasantly surprised at the economy. My 2004 545i would do about 24.5mpg.
I have not had it long enough to know what the average city mpg will be. Last edited by David3; 06-20-2016 at 04:42 PM.. |

I find the car is much less fun to drive when I preoccupy myself with fuel consumption. That said, driving conditions make a drastic difference. If you can keep 4,000 lbs rolling it sips. Stop and go, or particularly Go!... it sucks (fuel)!

I couldn't tell you - but I'm sure it's "poor." But to be expected.
