The 535.

Get the standard suspension or DHP. Also, stay away from the M Sport package that would otherwise add larger wheels. Finally, get the luxury seating package that'll give you multi-contour, active, and ventilated seats. That should give you a very comfortable ride!

I've been through a similar dilemma as you recently, just a step below. I've driven a 528i (standard suspension), a 528i (EDC), and an E250 (Avantgarde).

Nothing rides like the Merc (truly impressive almost magic carpet ride), but the 528i with EDC is really 95% of the way there regarding ride comfort. The 528i with standard suspension is in my opinion subpar in this regard.

The BMW is however, miles ahead in the drivetrain, the cabin tech, and, to my eyes, in interior & exterior design. The Merc does feel to me like it's geared towards old people (design-wise), but it drives really well.

What's wrong with the M Sport? I was thinking about getting a 535 with the M Package this Fall.

Nothing wrong with the M Sport, in fact I wouldn't have a car without this package. I like my cars to be set up quite firm, however OP's priority was ride quality and you don't buy a M Sport for ride quality you buy it for the handling bias...

What kind of question is that? Those 2 are such different cars. They don't even match up on any level.

Tough call as we recently went through the same comparison. For me, I prefer the looks of the MB but ride, performance, interior and everything else goes to BMW. Sit in a MB and then a 5 with the Multi contour seats and you will be shocked at how bad the MB feels. Just drove ours 1,400 miles and it was the best ride of any car I've owned and that is a lot at 23 different cars. We got the Modern Line to get the interior colors that we wanted so that may be part of the difference but I can't imagine that an M-Sport would be that different.

I have a C class that rides much smoother than a 3 or 4 series but the 5 is heads and shoulders better than the E class.

What would you look at as an alternative to the 5'er?

Same space
Sedan
Same price range
Google: BMW 530 vs Mercedes 350 = 350000 hits, seems like there
are more people doing this comparison
