I never thought the specs were so close! Also, it annoys me that BMW interiors are so similar. Surely they can do better than that. I'm not saying the interiors dont look good but they are far too similar.
Also, there are a number of reasons why the 7 looks so much bigger than the 5: - it has bigger/bolder features like the grille, headlights, rear lights, chrome detailing etc. - the new 5 is more 3 series-like in its design features, whereas the E60 had smoother panels and looks bulkier especially in M-sport trim. These differences make the cars look a lot different even though the cars arent far off in dimensions. I guess it's good though because if you buy a 5 or 7 you want them to look different.

Great comparison! I don't know whats the deal with BMW right now because the 7 looks more aggressive than the 5... I thought the 7 is supposed to be all about elegance, classiness and sportiness but as it seems the 5 owns that crown, apart from the "aggressiveness" which it lacks. The interior of the 5 is very nice and so does the 7... It took me a while to figure out which is which but the M steering wheel gave up the 7. The looks of 5's interior are much nicer and elegant more than the 7. I don't know maybe BMW should switch their badges...

Lost in translation
Auto Motor und Sport called this story “Which sedan is the better choice?”.
I threw Google's translation bot at the page - but it's almost impossible to decipher regardless. I think I managed to 'pry' some sense from Google's translation of the article's last paragraph (but this is definitely NOT an accurate translation - I dropped a number of sentences and references). Here's their conclusion: The 7’s imposing looks is a status symbol and therefore the justification for its high cost. The strengths of the 7 series are skillfully combined with the 5 series graceful lines which BMW's flagship car lacks.Hopefully I did't botch it too much. Maybe a German speaking forum member could take a shot at it. |

It seems that many of the posts are concerned with angel eyes, what color is your interior, etc. I've driven BMWs when they had crank handles for the windows and NO air conditioning. When I sold my 2002 tii and bought a1976 530i stick shift, I asked my dealer about power windows. He said "if you're shifting all day, are you telling me you can't roll a window down?" There was a time when BMWs were so few on the road that we would flash our lights at one another when the rare one appeared.
There's a point to this rant. BMW has, without question, lost it's way. I'd give back my angel eyes, my colored leather interior, even my HUD which I love, if they could make my 550ix Sport into what a BMW should be. If I didn't have a lease, I'd sell it. Every time I move that steering wheel and feel almost nothing of the road, it irritates the s__t out of me. I'm reading on these posts that people are buying springs to lower their cars, coil overs, etc. This is ridiculous!! Why should we have to pay money to turn a $70,000 BMW into a BMW? It seems to me that a corporate decision has been made that the "core" drivers are not enough. They need to produce a 5 series that ANY driver would like. Get out of your Lexus, and buy a BMW 5 series, you'll feel right at home. Now we have mood lighting, light up door handles, new interior colors, etc. Someone must have forgot about that slogan "The Ultimate Driving Machine." |

Wow... they do look very similar.
Even I classify myself as a BMW enthusist I had a hard time spoting the difference in the side shot and the console shot.
