Alloy wheels and cracking?

One of the options I might get when buying GAP insurance from ALA is alloy wheel insurance.
I'm getting the 19" on my LCI. One guy at work as a M3 which is 2 years old from new and he said that two of his alloys have cracked, he put them down to speed bumps.

Do other people have experience of alloys cracking?
Those wheels ain't cheap

Garage List
This is a couple of years old - the 'summarising' post is Dec11 - but unless things have improved on the RFT front, it still leaves room for concern..

Blaster, I had a talk with ALA today about the alloy wheels and they don't cover cracks or breaks - its more scuffs/kerbing which they are happy to repair (up to 9 times in a 3 years period). Don't think it is worth the £179.00 quoted as you can get them refurbed at £40 a corner from a mobile guy. BMW might be different but ALA deffo don't cover cracks/breaks.

This is a worry. I just bought the alloy wheel insurance based upon the state of our roads at the moment. I am not worried about scuff repairs only wheel cracking etc. just received the insurance schedule in the post today. Will read carefully.

Haj, the lady I spoke to said there was a 30 day cooling off period so you may be able to get your money back. This was specifically with ALA; others may insure the wheels in case of cracks/breaks. I read a thread on here which said that non-runflat tyres are much more forgiving on the wheels but it's a difficult one as the reason I got the tyre insurance was because of the runflats being so expensive.

My tyre guy told me 19" wheels on BMW/Audi/Mercedes are a complete nightmare and best avoided, he comes across loads that are cracked. I opted for the standard 18" wheel on my LCI M-Sport and to be honest the new design makes the wheels appear bigger than they are anyway!

What a strange thing for him to say? I have run 19"s for 3 years on my E60 and a few months on my F10, no problems with either, and have colleagues on 19's on their BM's and Mercedes with no problems either.

Plus they look fantastic

Thanks. Looks as though I am covered against wheel failure. Will send an email just to check.

BMW. Bought my car on 31 Dec. Got a cracking deal - one and a half new tyres in 4 yrs will justify the cost.

What's the situation with the alloy wheel insurance - does it cover cracked alloys?

Balster, the ALA insurance doesnt cover cracked or broken wheels, just scuffs and marking. From hajmuntz post it looks like the wheels are covered by BMW but you might want to confirm thsi with them. If it is yes, I would pay the extra and go with BMW as teh 19" alloys cost around £500 a corner

I'm off to my dealer in the morning to see what the 'crack' is.
