DRLs
Hey,
Does anyone know why BMW chose to activate only the front lights when you tick the "daytime running lights" options? There's a new law in Switzerland since January 1st that mandates daytime lights and while the front lights are legal (i.e. you don't need dipped headlights), I'm not sure if it's legal to drive only with front lights. I'm guessing this could also be changed via coding? Or dealer adjustment? Thanks! Al. |

It can be change with coding, and I doubt it's illegal with only the DRL fronts on.

Are you suggesting that the new law would require the taillights to be on during the day, as well? That would seem a bit excessive if it were the case... although, I'm always amazed at how many people fail to turn on their lights when in the rain, fog, or snow, where lack of taillights on a highway with poor visibility can be very dangerous even during the day.

I agree with the OP. DRL's should be both front and tail lights. Why not? What's the harm? As you said ezmass, many people DO fail to turn their lights on when they really should.

Over the last few weeks I have followed several cars on the motorway early evening with no rear lights. Many cars with front DRL have dashboards that are lit when engine running. So we get some less well informed drivers thinking their Range Rover is fully illuminated as they drive at 80 mph illuminating the rear if the car two yards in front with their LED lights with their back end all dark.
BMW seem to vary their rear light on with DRL some have the two linked others do not. In auto position they work together. The rear on with DRL can be coded to be on or off. |

Yesterday I've ordered a $7 ethernet-ODB connector from China, hopefully I can get hold of a compatible e-sys and supporting files. I had my car into the dealership recently (December) and they updated the software so I'll need something fairly recent.
Actually, after the update, the annoying thing now is that the auto start-stop is much more fernickety. It used to of course hesitate to turn off the engine if it was cold and if the car was still warming up, but after 5-10 minutes depending on the outside temperature it used to reliably stop the engine at the lights. Nowadays, you can even drive for 100km and then stop at the lights - seemingly all the conditions for auto start/stop are fulfilled (steering wheel straight ahead, warm engine, warm cabin, speed was above 7kph before coming to a stop, etc) and it sits there and claims that it doesn't want to stop the engine. Beats me what it's thinking... |

It also won't function if your battery is weak. Mine often turns the car back on all by itself if a red traffic light is veeeery long. I use AutoHold all the time so it can do this without surprising me. And don't forget that using Sport on the transmission shuts the ASS off. OR it could be having an off day.

I have my lights on auto all the time, like I did in my E60. However, I realised today that the rear lights are not on, unless the full lights are on ie not during the day. This is odd, my E60 had both front and rear on auto lights, why the change? I do alot of motorway driving and it worries me not having them on for visabiilty
