$300-400 for Cabin Filter?

I just called to schedule for an oil change, cabin filter change, and also to take care of the recall for the thermostat.

The service dept told me they wanted about $300-400 just to change the cabin filter. I honestly think that's way to much and I was wondering if there was something else I could do. Thanks!

That's the stealership at its finest. They prey on people that don't know any better.

The stealership is always out to get us. When my AC is on it smells like sh*t. Not literally, but it smells really bad like mildew and dampness. I remember last year before it smelled I used to spray air freshener directly into the AC vents. If I change my cabin air filter would it help any or should I do something else??

The mildew smell can come from at few things: air filter, wet leaves/debris in or around the system, and water around the evaporator coil. The filter is the first thing to check. Check for leaves and debris while the filter is out. Your last ditch effort would be a cleaner that is sprayed into the vents (inside and outside) to kill off the mildew.

Usually happens when you don't constantly run the ac, bacteria builds up in the system when it's not running. You can buy a can of cleaner that you place in the footwell and set off whilst the ac system is running, close the door and let it circulate around the ac system. It will kill off the bacteria, you then need to run the ac all year round to prevent it reoccurring

Lol thank God for the tube and also for bimmerpost! Thanks for the advice guys. Where can I find this cleaner at? I'm guessing auto zone or something. Most of my experience with the people at autozone isn't pleasant as they usually don't know what the hell they're talking about or what the hell im talking about if I go in asking for something haha

Thanks. Will definitely check. I'm sure changing both filter and that cleaner will be good because the smell is a combination of mildew and also of that air freshener smell I used to spray into the vents. The combination smell isn't pleasant to say the least, sometimes I prefer to just freeze my ass off instead of put the heat on lol

Bavauto has a download able diy, but basically the same as the short video. They are selling the BMW filters (2). For $111 bucks. All over the net for $25-$30. They got some magic ingredients or sumpin.

I'm no expert but I know with air filters there can be many different qualities available. Generally the cheaper ones don't provide the same filtration levels. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will chime in with the technical details on how to tell the difference...

Go look at Rockauto and you will see that there are about a dozen options at various price levels. The dealership trying to claim it is a two hour job and costs $300 is fucking ridiculous, it is what six screws?

Be sure to get the charcoal activated filters. IIRC, that's the stock filter medium.

It's not hard but it's a little time consuming and hard to get to. I probably spent 45 mins total with most of that trying to get it all aligned properly again with the airbag. Could probably do it in 25 mins the second time.

I dont know man... I was blown away... I told them over the phone that its like a 10 minute job tops and he said "well why dont you do it for yourself than since you know so much"

I had the car scheduled for an oil change so I just thought why not have them change the cabin filter too because It would save me time aha
