Its a great engine - aluminium. Noted my month old one warms up so much quicker than my E61 535d which was a cast iron engine. It even has a 'NEW' oil temperature gauge that all mechanically sympathetic drivers LOVE! Better in all respects and quieter.

Despise the RFT's though - they are shocking at times - and a having a spare wheel strapped to my boot floor. If that is still the case my next car will NOT be a BMW.

You are in luck. You can spec the new G30 with a spare tire option.

I think the only 5 series diesel model here in the US is a 528I if someone can correct me but why don't they have the 535d here in the US and 2nd does it chatter like a locomotive?

I have the euro equivalent 530D and it doesn't clatter at all when warm. Sounds like a gas car. Pulls like a freight train too. Get 34 mpg combined. Does great for my 70 mpg commute.

Hopefully the new model coming to US has more power and better mpg

I have a 2015 530d (Which is the US 535d) and it doesn't sound like a gas car. It sounds good - for a diesel. It doesn't sound like a gas car, sadly.

I really like it but I'd have gone nowhere near it if I lived in a world of $3 gas.

Cannot remember the last time I paid $3 for fuel. It was a little above $2 earlier this year, around $2.50 this week. And that's for 93 octane.

THIS! I would never own a diesel in the US. Pointless! Americans think it is somewhat "cool" to drive a diesel.

Have you driven the 535d? The power delivery of this car is awesome. I disagree with the poster above who says it doesn't sound like a gas car. From the inside is sounds like a V8 to me. I hear 0 chatter unless the car is just started and not warmed up and even then its minimal. The car feels so much faster than it is for normal driving. Power is instant.

The times you know its different is when you really get on it. Its kind of opposite of a gas car. The power comes on low and then it fades when it hits the top of the rev range. After it shifts, it gets another surge then fades again. Takes some getting used to and you learn to keep it in the sweet spot. I drive like that maybe 2% of the time so for me, I'd rather have that instant low power than the having to floor it and let it rev out to get full power. I would buy the g30 diesel after having this one. By far my favorite car I have owned.

Yes, I have spent extensive amount of time in a 335D, 535D (US) and 520D & 535D (EU) versions. If we had more engine options in the US it would of been one thing but we only get one. These are great cars in stop and go traffic but at least to me they get super boring after.

Rest of the world offers much cheaper diesel prices in comparison to regular gas and diesel cars have lower tax ratings which forces most folks to buy them. We need more incentives in the US before folks really get into "D" models.

The biggest problem in EU is price of fuel,in my country(and rest of EU) is about 8,5-9 kuna per liter (5,1 dollar per gallon),for our luck diesel get much more power and torque than before 15 years. So there is too small difference between power of diesel and petrol,of course there is sound which creates a "problem",and taxes of course.

As a person, who has gone through the car-modding phase in his youth, I view an engine's sound (i.e. noise) as immaterial and often unrelated to performance. For example, who here has raced AND beat a Tesla sedan? In most cases, a high-performance exhaust system (read louder) is often nothing more than an affectation. Another example of this is engine noise artificially generated in the audio systems of some performance cars (specifically the Mustang turbo four). Talk about form over function. Providing engine noise does not impinge on interior comfort (and falls within legal limits), what's objectionable to getting 40 mpg on the highway. One still enjoys the majority of benefits of a BMW 5 series sedan. Moreover, I'd wager that the 535d, in city driving, is a match for the average 3-liter gas version. Consider that Audi didn't win successive Le Mans victories using its gas engines.

Yeah, I just hate the 500+ miles on a tank, effortless power, 35+ mpg overall, significantly better resale value, much cooler summer A/C especially when idling, and yes, its cooler to have a niche car for dumb USA that can also handle the stoplight grand prix. It just doesn't go "vroom vroom" when you rev it. But it doesn't have fake engine sound piped in at least..... Pointless
