Exhaust Options for 550xi

I am new to this site and very sure this has been answered a million times over by now. i Recently bought a 2016 550xi M sport..did the Dinan Shockware to it..placed 20's wheel tires, blacked out stuff, and have a trunk lip spoiler and Rear difusser on order, but one grip i have is the sound is just not there at all..i have seen many options for aftermarket exhaust systems but all are in the 3k range or close to that..im just curious to know if there is an economical option out there that could give me the rumble sound of this V8 without breaking the bank and more importantly not cause any Drone effect.

Thanks Guys

M5 competition package mufflers (that's what they tell me here), but get inline I'm looking for a pair myself. I've explored the corsa or Borla option as well. Cheaper than most.

Be careful when you are using the terms "mufflers" and "exhaust system". If you want to use the M5 exhaust systems, standard or competition, the location of the mufflers is not the same. Luckily, the M5 mufflers are much smaller than the stock 550i ones so if you have a competent muffler shop they can make the adjustment or you can make the openings in your stock diffuser larger.

I went the conversion route on the rear bumper with the M5 diffuser and bumper adapter to keep my convenience features intact. For the exhaust, I had my shop cut stock exhaust pipes just before they get squished and use an expander to get to 3", then weld in a pair of M5 mufflers I picked up from another forum member. I like it because it gave me the V8 rumble I wanted and the vacuum lines are still connected so quiet when I need to get out of the neighborhood and nice rumble when you roll into it on an on ramp. No drone at any speed and I have gotten compliments from everyone that rode with me before and after the upgrade. Just got my exhaustmeister so once I install that, I can have obnoxious on demand.

There are several posts that already cover this topic in detail and a lot of great people on this forum who will help. I just got my 550i xdrive and there are plenty of people that have helped me spend my money on making my ride the OEM+ that suits my personal tastes.

Happy motoring!

I recently did resonator delete with factory mufflers and while inside the cabin the sound difference is negligible, I've been told outside the car sounds awesome. It's not louder but the rumble is there and you really hear it on cold starts.

I recommend going to your local muffler shop and ask them about Magnaflow or Borla. They usually can do a custom install for you and you can keep or delete the resonator also. On Ebay, you'll find Megan Racing axle back mufflers for ~$550, I've heard good reviews on those and I'm considering that option for mine too.

Here's my setup.

Yeah I've also been researching into the Megan racing axle back setup. For price seems awesome option for what i Need from an individual exhaust. I may pull the trigger on it. I spoke with my muffler guy and if I bring him the M5 Megan version he can weld it on to my 550. Should be straight forward. I will tell him as well to delete the resonators as well.

Is your setup with the flaps in open mode???

Just to give you update on the Megan racing supremo exhaust, they are awesome. Had them custom installed almost 3 weeks ago and kept resonator and now it sounds like a sports car. No drone at all the blacked out tips look sick and fit perfectly with my M5 style rear diffuser. Inside cabin I can still listen to music talk no issues but when I need to hear the exhaust slight push on pedal and this beast roars. I'm just shocked for the price of the Megan axle back how much I gained. So if anyone was on the fence about this setup just do it you will be happy. And the. Tea money you save on this spend it on a chip.

Do you have any pics or video? Curious about the sound. Still haven't done anything to my exhaust yet.

I went with the m5 comp package exhaust. I bought the exhaust from downpipes back in 1 piece, however my shop cut the exhaust right behind the stock resonators, and they were able to make everything fit.

The diameters between the pipes are different, but again any good exhaust shop can make it fit.

Also, using the oem exhaust, you can still use the oem exhaust valves, (check exhaustmeister) which lets you control the valves manually., which i like, when family is in the car, i can keep the valves closed, and keep the car in comfort mode.

if you do the m5 exhaust get them m5 cross member to avoid droning.

I replaced the 550i diffuser with an oem m5 diffuser, bumper adapter etc. now i can swap the oem m5 diffuser for any aftermarket diffuser made for an m5

Also, I went with this setup, because its just loud enough for me, as i use the car for family hauling duties, as well as customer hauling duties from time to time

I also recently purchased the cyba tips which are a 90mm vs 80mm (stock) which i will replace when the weather gets better.

Theres a few guys with the 550xi's that have done the m5 swap, if you go that route, make sure to do some research as there are some differences in the installation etc.
