However, I feel that if you have a mount for the phone, people would less likely stare down at their lap or fumble around with it just to read a text. It may not solve the problem but it will probably minimize accidents. I care about the innocent drivers and pedestrians that get hurt because of morons on their phones. So having a mounting standard should help.
True.. We're basically making the same point. I'm just saying, to me, it's better to continue adding integration with the cars' screens, which IMO is even better than using a mount and the phone's smaller screen (and access to even more apps). So, I guess the mounts are probably a good interim solution. I just think on some level we already have enough that can be done through bluetooth to even now just put the phone in the center console or another compartment (I use the little driver's side compartment by steering wheel in my F30 for example) and leave it there until you get to where you're going. I do think they probably need to add some Nav integration to get there for everyone. Personally, I think music, navigation (if your car doesn't have one built in), and phone calls should be all that anyone needs their phone for while driving. Problem is, like you said, it's not realistic no matter how many people die due to trivial text messages or Facebook updates…. Too many people just don't think/care these days. So, I find putting it away is a great way to avoid the temptation when you hear your phone buzz to look at every text or email while you're driving. Not fool proof either, but a self-imposed deterrent at least.

I also agree on the drunk driving. I know why ($$$), but will still say it.. why don't we just put those ignition breathalyzers in every car… sure people can still have their sober friends blow in it for them, but how many sober friends are going to be willing to do so, and get in the car with a drunk driver, when they could instead just drive the car themselves? It would be expensive to implement, but think about how many lives that would save. I'm sure the technology could be cost effective at such a mass level if it were to ever to be mandated and honestly, who cares if it isn't. I would pay a few hundred bucks more for every car I ever buy from now on if it meant I would never have to worry about a drunk driver again.

I use this CD slot mount from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Koomus-CD-Univ.../dp/B00HRKI5V2

It does cover up a few of the # buttons, but I didn't use them all anyways. (Sorry for image quality, was in my garage with poor lighting)

I'm developing a mobile phone holder specifically for F10/F11/F18. It will match the car interior in texture and quality. Anybody interested?

gotta be careful with the 5 series vents. They seem to be super easy to break if you pull the mount out. I broke mine. You gotta replace the whole thing. [IMG][/IMG]

There are some reasonably priced Chinese replacements on ebay. Haven't bought one yet, but I have the same problem.

i had a kenu air mount and eventually broke2 of the horizontal vents on the center right. Doesn't look too bad, but those two horizontal blinds don't move anymore.

Got a small magnet mount and a phone case with a tiny plate for a metal plate to be inserted under. Mounted to the right of the stereo. blends in nice, tilts toward driver and blends in good. If your phone doesn't have wireless charging should find a case that has the plate slot, or you can slip it in with with pressure in most larger phone cases.

This has been working well for me and I like where it keeps the phone. Not great if you need to use the passenger cup holder, though.

I get that many use their phones for navigation but it just opens the door for more texting and emailing and whatever else besides driving IMHO. Better to continue advancing integration, eyes and hands free so you can do what you will do regardless, but at least you won't have to look at or touch your phone to do it. No reason they can't integrate the navigation from your phone the same way they already have with music apps, texts, emails, etc. I don't like any use at all, but we're all human and people are going to do it anyway, might as well make it as safe as we can.

In fact, I like your idea but with a twist, start requiring integration and a cradle in the center console and require software in the phones that will not allow them to function in any capacity while the engine is running unless the phone is in the cradle. Hard to implement (ex. what about passengers phones...), but I could see something like that eventually and it would save a lot of lives.
I think it's more dangerous to look down at a phone to use the gps, hence I want mine mounted and a standard like VESA would be excellent.

(i don't use the idrive gps as it doesn't show where the police are)

Can someone post a picture and link to these "cradles". Currently using a windshield cellphone holder. No idea what these "cradles" are.
Thanks in advance!

I had a look at the link you provided. This one looks pretty slick. I have one that has the Qi charging and clips into the vent in an alligator fashion. This looks better. Not cheap, but looks really nice.

Here's what I use now. functional since it's magnetic on the back of my phone that when i'm at the gym I can just stick it to any metal surfaces. so much better than leaving it on the gym floor

I have a GoXT magnetic holder that I got from O'Reilly's. It does require mounting a small metal disc to the back of your phone, but the magnetic hold is strong enough to keep your phone in place, and it's a lot more minimalist than most other phone holders. I bent the base of the holder to follow the curve of the dash right above the start/stop button and mounted the disc low enough on my phone that it doesn't cover the button when I have the phone on the holder.
