New E-Class vs New 5 Series
The eternal battle.... Now in its 5th generation the all new F10 5-Series goes head to head with the newly released Mercedes Benz E-Class. These comparisons have always been made, but now with a new sense of speed. Courtesy of the german language magazine Autobild we now have a head-to-head photoshoot and comparison of the two cars. In this case, they decided to compare the popular Mercedes Benz E350 CDI vs. BMW 530d. Both cars being elegant yet very powerful diesel powered cars.
Included here is the photo set, but please make sure to read the full writeup @autobild: http://www.autobild.de/artikel/vergl...i_1020073.html |

Although, I'm not in LOVE with the looks of either....
I'll take the new 5 series over the MB. But, BMW needs to offer the 550xi with DCT. Knowledgeable driving enthusiasts aren't going to accept anything less than a DUAL CLUTCH TRANSMISSION in 2010+. |

Really? wow, that feels like a minivan from dodge/chrysler i thought the E was good looking when it first came out (while I was in germany) but now, juxtaposed against the new 5, it just seems a little soft (especially the rear fascia, the tail lights on the E just doesn't do it for me). |

I also thought the E was pretty good looking when it came out. Now, seeing the E next to the F10 5-series, the E looks like the box that that the F10 gets shipped in!
I wondered if the 5 would look as classy as the E, but seeing them side by side, I would say it looks much classier than the E. |

I strongly dislike the looks of the E. It looks to me like Mercedes was all out of ideas when it came to designing the rear lights.
The 5 is georgeous on it's own and beside the E it looks like Gisele Bundchen. |

The dimensions of the 5 are smaller right?

The Face:
-5 is happy and smiling with a glow in her eyes -E looks sad with downward dowdy sad look The butt (rear ): -5 looks perky, firm and sassy -E looks saggy, soft and a drag The side view: -5 looks sharp, young and fresh -E looks old, fuzzy and confused The inside: -5; she's as beautiful inside and outside ... makes me want to spend most of my day in her -E; Even if I could get past her dull exterior ... I think I would not return her calls after being inside. |

All around, BMW went softer with this car. I dont like that, its a step backward.
Looks like benz is trying some new things. Always a positive. Since I am a fan of BMW and this was a pick one or the other scenario, I would pick the 5.

Everything about the new 5 looks better than the E-class though interior space appears to be greater in the Merc but only slightly. The one bum note for the Bimmer is it's boot, it's shape and packaging is awful in companison and though it probably isn't any smaller overall I doubt the same amount of suitcases will fit, so best pack soft bags when chosing to travel next time. Also the option of proper paddels instead of their awful two way system of other BMW is much appreciated and long over due.

F10 5er is slightly longer and wider with much longer wheelbase while standing a bit lower. Amazingly F10 kept all that in good proportion.
BMW F10 5-Series Dimension Wheelbase: 116.9 in Length x width x height: 192.8 x 73.2 x 57.6 in MB W212 E-Class Dimension Wheelbase: 113.1 in Length x width x height: 191.7 x 73.0 x 57.7 in |

In terms of performance, BMW makes the best 3l diesel engines (also 2l, but that s another story)..
In terms of design, the new 5 looks much better than its rival (either interior or exterior)... Even MB had a good start of sales for their new model, when the new 5 will be available at dealers I bet that the E will have a big decrease! |

I love the new 5, but BMW really needs to start putting an exhaust in each side of the car instead of the duals in one side. It just looks bad!!!!

the BMW is better looking... nice lines, interior, stance, design.... i'm not %100 sold on the new 5, need to see it in the flesh.... but in these photos, there is no question for me which i'd prefer.
