I have a June 2014 520d SE with Business Media.

When I press the TP button so that TP is displayed in the top right hand corner of the main idrive display, I would expect to get pestered every few minutes with BBC local radio station traffic reports.

I don't.

I live in Oxfordshire and on previous cars (Mercedes, Ford, Lexus, Audi) I used to get pestered during morning and evening rush hours with traffic updates from BBC Oxford, BBC Berkshire, BBC Wiltshire and BBC 3 Counties every 20 mins or so.

Now all I get is an occasional update from Classic (not much use as it's national) and very, very rarely from BBC Oxford.

Has anyone else experienced this lack of local traffic updates? Is there anything I can do? As usual, the manual is not much use as it just says press the button and you will get reports.

Any suggestions most appreciated.

I have the same experience, although I did find it worked in Belgium! I wonder if it's something to do with having my radio set to DAB, rather than FM.

Update on this.

I put the car into my local dealer (who also supplied the car) to see if they could rectify the issue, or at least find a fault.

They're scratching their heads as they say it should work, but doesn't and they don't know why. They've put a request into BMW Germany to look into, but warned it won't be very high up the priority list (which I actually agree with as it's not exactly a major fault).

Chased the dealer today who said they took a car out of a similar spec to mine, and had the same issue.

Can anyone report there's actually working? Please bear in mind my car has Business Media and not Pro Media (which may make a difference).

Have you done any testing? Assuming you have, re-tune the radio before you set off for work, and keep listening on FM to see if anything comes through. Maybe you are in a location between frequencies and it has an issue to keep finding the local traffic station? Just a guess really. I don't have DAB on my pro media and the traffic announcement works for me.

Another experiment, when you are a distance from your house on your travel, re-tune the radio while driving to see if you can pick a different frequency of station.

Usually for me I believe I have capital announcements and I have capital saved in my favourites, might have something to do with it?

Worth a shot, best guesses I can help with.

It *may* make a difference: I have Pro Media and DAB and TP pesters you incessantly on FM or DAB. I can't really believe there would be any difference though as TP has been around ever since RDS came along about 30 years ago.

Mine worked for the first time ever in the UK one day last week - music playing from the usb stick was interrupted by Classic FM. It happened once, and hasn't happened again since then.

TP has never worked for me either, but I would never use it (I have Pro Media).

My July 2013 f11 is the same. Prof media. Infrequent alerts and at a national level. I turned it off. My 2011 f11 was the same. Perhaps there is a setting somewhere that I missed.

I think you might have to have the radio station that offers travel information saved in one of your 8 presets. Do not quote me on this, try it and find out. It worked for me...

Interesting point psyxologos. I tested this theory yesterday on my way into work and for the first time since I have had the car,I actually got a TP alert from the saved local radio station. Once again, German efficiency at its finest

I think in the UK, ClassicFM is/was the national carrier for this...

Nah, I'd saved the local BBC station as a preset so I can switch to it and just listen until a traffic update comes on, alas this doesn't help the "auto" TP functionality.

.....but saying that, it's the DAB version not the FM version. Maybe I need to save the FM version?

Works on DAB - thats the local station that I saved to try this.

Quick update on this, we're making progress!

Changed my BBC local radio favourite button preset from DAB to FM and hey presto it started working!

Just to check this out, I was driving through an adjacent county and saved the FM BBC local station to an unused preset and traffic reports started coming through on that station too!!

This isn't really much help if your travelling through a different area (unless you save the local BBC radio station on FM to a favourite button), but hey, it's progress right?

In mine saving ANY BBC station will give you the local news and traffic when yu change county. I travel frequently in the North West of England and I get BBC Lans, Cumbria and Merseyside depending on where the car is as I have radio 2 saved in my presets...

Works in FM for me too - tried BBC Radio Leeds (FM) this morning and it worked as a saved station.
