Oil change cost?

I've only ever had my oil changed at the dealer (while under warranty) and now I'm due for my first oil change outside the dealer. I was curious, what do folks usually pay for this this? I looked around and was quoted $260 for it along with brake fluid change. Does that seem a bit pricey?

Thanks!

Seems right on par. Figure about $100-$120 in oil/filters/fluid and the remainder of the cost is probably 1.5hrs labor.

an oil change shouldnt be any more then $100-120 dollars max. what else are you paying for?

use 5w30/5w40. do not use Mobil 1. castrol is a decent choice, liquidmoly/motul are amongst the best.

I would change oil every 5000 miles. My oil is very dirty even at that interval - would not go any further.

It's just an oil change and brake fluid flush. I called a few other shops today and everyone is quoting me between $200 and $260. The dealership quoted $400-450.

Most places said they use Mobil 1. Any particular reason why I should avoid it? I've also been topping it off with it in between oil changes (got a bunch from Costco).

Mobil 1 is watered down and more liquidy compared to other types of oils - a fellow mechanic of mine told me people have been reporting engine failure from using it as a result. I have heard from more then one different source not to use this oil.

Castrol is a better choice, its thicker which provides better engine protection at operating temp but I heard that it shears down a weight (eg. 5w40 --> 5w30 after 3000 miles of use) so as a result, castrol isnt the best choice but still better then Mobil so I can only imagine what is going on in your engine when you use Mobil.

also, lots of people i see use 0w oils for their BMW. the only time you would ever need an oil this watery is in temperatures that consistently fall to -20C. otherwise, the oil weight that BMW recommends (5w30/5w40) is best.

Motul and liquidmoly are very good choices.

making the switch to something of better quality 5w40(castrol, or the others ive mentioned) you will notice that your engine runs quieter and smoother especially at high revs or under load.

Ah, very interesting. Thanks for the insight. I presume most car shops won't have that oil on hand (since they all mentioned Mobil 1 on the phone) and that I would have to buy it separately and take with me.

I wonder what oil does the dealership put in?

I've talked to some reputable shops (good russian mechanic, great prices and very fair)

he doesnt have a single bottle of mobil 1 anywhere. you walk into his shop and literally all you said is liquid moly, motul and castrol in either 5w30/5w40. his shop is busy.

BMW used to do this marketing thing with castrol. I dont know about now, doubt anythings changed but the BMW "high performance" oil I believe is castrol.

Look for dealership specials. I normally get charged $79 at my local BMW dealership with a coupon.

The BMW specialist I work for here in Houston runs oil service at 132.99 for a N52/N54/N55 with an OE BMW filter and 7qt. of Motul 5w40 Full Synthetic.

Complete brake flush runs about 149.

Keep in mind pricing over geographical boundaries isn't apples to apples, price vary greating from one region to the next... but just to give you an idea.

Just spoke with another dealership and they do have a $99 special for oil change (penzoil) and 15% off for brake fluid flush. However, the flush costs $200 while local car shops charge $80-90.

How often do you do brake fluid flush?

Brake fluid should be flushed every 2 years, or earlier if the moisture content exceeds 2%

I'll keep that in mind, thanks.

I just let the dealership do whatever they had to the first four years and now in year 5 I am on my own since the warranty expired. I'll see if I can dig up maintenance paperwork and see they've done so far.
