Just did mine in my 550i. Took me a bit as there are two cover plates and the filter is on the bottom rather than the top as it seems in the 535i. Also my car is lowered on H&Rs and that posed a problem in that I had to use ramps I instead of jacks as planned. Access to a lift is definitely nice to have. Got it done and instructions helped...also I am familiar with changing oil in all my cars so not a big deal. Was able to reset the oil service indicator using instructions found also on the forum. . Car had 3000m on it as I have just done my breaking and a little driving since purchase in Aug and wanted to have the break in oil gone and fresh new oil in the car till its 1st indicated service (still 11k away as indicated on I-Drive). Next one is on BMW then according to their Scheduled Maintenance plan but I will continue to do interval changes on my dime to enhance my vehicle's health and well being (I do follow then Old School Maintenance Schedule when possible - great results so far!)

Hello

When you guys are doing the oil change before the bmw service interval, you don't have to reset the maintenance minder right?

Yes you do have to reset it. The i-Drive controller allows you to do it pretty easily. There is an easy way to do it and that's what the shop does. I change mine every 7500 miles give or take 1k and do it the same way. Saves a few $$ and gives me piece of mind. Search the forums...pretty easy to do.

Um if you reset the service interval, wouldn't the factory oil service mileage change? It's normally 15,000, 30,000, 45,000 and so on. I'm not sure if you understand my question.

1. 1,200 Miles (Owner)
2. 7,500 miles (Owner)
3. 15,000 miles (Dealer)reset
4. 22,500 miles (Owner)
5. 30,000 miles (Dealer)reset

I'm planning on doing the same thing as Gatoman39 and changing the oil myself in between dealer services. Question for everyone is whether switching between the BMW oil (on dealer services) and Mobil 1 0W-30 (on my own service) would have any impact to the car. The Mobil oil is more convenient and cost less since they sell it at Wal-Mart. I was wondering if this switching back and forth would affect the car in any way.

Thanks.

They sell 0W-40 European Formula at Walmart too. It is the correct spec for the N55, and meets the current BMW LL-01 spec. There is no need to deviate from this especially during the warranty period. Also, switching from one oil to another, so long as it's on the approved list has no impact on the car. I've been doing it for years with Castrol.

Hello All,

New in the forum, first time BMW owner and first time with car under warranty. I see many of you DYI change the oil and filter between the CBS service intervals and even reset the oil change indicator.

So have you had the dealer detecting on the diagnosis computer that oil/filter has been additionally changed and if there was any problem?

Thanks in advance.

I bought my 535i used about 10 months ago and just rolled through 50K, so I am going to do an oil change

- No dipstick
- No indication in the owner's manual of the oil capacity
- Oil filter socket from e46 doesn't even remotely fit F10 (nor does my LR4 wrench).

WTF BMW??

Just needed to vent

EDIT: And the filter socket required (86mm) is not a standard size. I checked at AutoZone and Advance Auto, looked on Summit Racing online. Ten or twelve sizes available up to 93mm, but not 86mm.

WTF BMW?!

Why not Mobile1 5w30 Full Synthetic? That is what the senior parts agent at my BMW dealership told me to buy. I also verified with my service advisor.

Thanks for the great write-up. Just did my first oil change. I now know you were being sarcastic about unscrewing the oil filter cap by hand. Glad I had my wrench handy. Next time I will buy the exact wrench as my standard universal oil wrench scratched the oil cap a bit (no big deal).

M1 5w30 does not meet the LL-01 certification thus it is not the correct oil for your car. If someone at the BMW dealership told you to use that oil I would never listen to any of their advise again.

Yup that would work perfectly. As long as it meets the BMW LL-01 spec (which Castrol 0w40 does) then you are good to go.

Just did my first oil change on my new-to-me 535 f10. That was probably the easiest oil change I've ever done. A lot like my wife's 4Runner, only less messy and no steel skid plates to wrestle with.

On that note, it looks like the cover for the "trap door" went missing on mine. Oh well, one less step next time I guess!

do you recall how much you spent on oil/filter? deciding whether to keep BMW doing my oil changes or do it myself

To me the only issue of DIY oil changes is how to dispose of the old oil. I have a 5al gas can that I use to take in the old oil.

Public school true story...

I go in to Auto Zone to dispose of the oil in the 5gal can. The girl behind the counter asks how much I have as there's a 20qt limit. I tell her as there are 4qts to a gallon and I have 5 gallons I'm at the limit. She proceeds to tell me, no, there are 5 quarts in a gallon and I'm 5 quarts over. I tell her that unless liquid measures have changed in the last 40 or so years there are, in fact, 4 quarts to a gallon. She refuses to believe me so I go grab one of their 5qt oil bottles and show her that the bottle holds 5 quarts or 1 gallon and 1 quart. That finally convinced her and they took my oil and I was off. I hope she learned something that day!!!
