After testing this out for over a week I am pretty certain that I've located the reason why my car gives me the increased battery discharge warning every 2 days if i don't drive the car.

I use to ALWAYS park my car and engage the rear ebrake but after a week where I didn't use the ebrake at all and i didn't get the error message! Seem like my issue is the same as another member here where the dealer fixed his ebrake. Give this a try and see if it helps you.

I am going to bring it up to the dealer at my next schedule visit.

hey guys, I had the same issue 3 weeks ago, and last week I finally got to put my car in the dealership. I already tried parking without the e-brake and etc., but it didn't work.
Today, I got the car back and the tech said he only updated the car's software and it should be good.

I will see how it goes and let you guys know if it worked.

One thing I notice after the update is that the car's sport mode (when transmission is selected) has a different gear selected than when the gear is in sport mode (when gear is shifted to the left; this one lowers it more). It's the same as my brother's F13 now.

New battery being goodwilled jointly by BMW and dealer.

Any way to tell whether or not it's been replaced?

Nice. Well i started getting the warning message again despite not using my ebrake at all. Strange how it seem to fix the issue for 2 weeks and then the next two weeks it popped up again.

Going to bring the car in to have them give me the latest and greatest software soon.

My battery was replaced for the first time this past May, but I am again starting to experience the early signs of a battery problem; car does not recall the radio station I was last listening to, as it’s on 87.7 FM when I start it up, not every time yet, but more and more frequently. Has BMW come up with a solution to its battery problems yet!? What gives!?

Is it true our batteries only charge when braking or coasting?

If so, do they not charge when our car is idling either in gear or Park, like most all other cars do?

(i.e.: if a car needs to be jumped, it’s good to let it idle to recharge the battery after the jump)

If the battery is in good condition the car will only charge it when the car is coasting or braking so that its using the wasted energy of the engine to top the battery up. The car monitors the battery though and will only let it drop to a certain level before it will engage the alternator all the time to recharge the battery i.e. if you do lots of short journeys. Also the car monitors the battery over its life time and changes the way it treats the battery as it ages and the performance drops off. Thats one of the reasons you need to register the a new battery when fitted so the car recognises the way to charge it.

Had this on the pre-LCI F10 - but only when the car was used on a ferry and had been locked in the hold. When returning to the car, the mirrors would not unfold automatically as usual, but had to press the button inside the door.

My mind tells me the battery may have discharged due to the alarm being constantly set off while in motion in the ferry. Only other time this issue has come up on dry land is when the car was sat still for 6 weeks.

They will probably try to tell you that you only drive the car short distances, not enough to charge the battery. The other one I have heard is they tell you they noticed in the car log that you left the lights on overnight. They will then suggest you install one of the trickle chargers. With any luck you can convince them to change the battery.

They diagnosed the issue as a bad cell and replaced the battery under warranty. The warning indicator was being triggered primarily because the turbo cooling fans continued to run after the engine was switched off. This behavior, while normal and to be expected, was causing the battery to discharge to a point beyond tolerance. A healthy battery supports this behavior and can fully recharge - a battery with bad cells cannot.

Good to know.

In my climate, dealers install a factory trickle charger with a built in charging port under the front bumper (you can barely see it). I've plugged it in overnight a couple of times in the past 3 weeks just to make sure the battery doesn't discharge too far. I haven't seen a warning message in my car yet. We are going on vacation for 2 /12 weeks next weekend and I plan to leave the trickle charger plugged in while I'm away.

I always lock the car when I leave it to make sure everything shuts down and goes to sleep. Hopefully I won't have a problem. Seems crazy to have to plug a modern car in, when we haven't had to install block heaters in our cars since 1998, but I guess all of the electronics place allot of demand on the glass mat battery.

This is exactly what happened to me in that order which was total BS. Luckily, my car wouldn't start when I went to pick it up at the dealer after they performed other service. I blamed them and they did a goodwill battery replacement.

Just got my first "increased battery discharge" warning this evening when parking at home. Been very cold the last few days around 0F at night) and I only drive about 10 miles each way to work. Let's just hope she starts in the morning ...

After having my battery replaced for "increased battery discharge" less than one year ago, I'm now getting this new never before seen message. I didn't leave anything on and I've gotten it multiple times thus far. Why!? Why!? Why!?

I have two E60's that used to have this problem regularly. Mike Miller from Roundel suggested a Deltran Battery Tender and even through this cold weather I haven't had a problem.

Very sorry to hear that the F10 is experiencing the same issue.

I have had this message twice in the last 3months while parked in my garage (i have the car for 9 months now)..it seems (what my SA explained) that when i turn off the car with the push button that i need to press twice and make sure everything in the dashboard is off....it seems that in those occasions i parked the car inside the garage and got out fast pressing only the start.stop button once..since I don't lock the car in the garage I assume it just kept running until next time I drove it...haven't gotten the message again but i make sure to press the start/stop button twice :-) my 2 cents

Had the same issue. BMW just said that it was my P3 vent gauge that was plugged into the OBD port--which prevented the car from sleeping. I find that a bit suspect, but wondering how many of you who have had this issue also have a P3 vent gauge.

Question

Mine happened 8 months ago and the dealer replaced the battery for a bad cell then it happened again 2 months latter I took it back in and they updated the software and never had the problem again. Even though I always engage my parking brake since my car is a manual and I park on a slight incline so for me the issue was fixed....

I installed the JB4 stage 2 about 2 weeks ago with the latest firmware and never had the warning light pop up like many others were experiencing and saying it was due to the JB4.
Today after letting my car sit for almost 20 hrs overnight. On a 64+ weather The warning light came back on. I suspect the culprit is that after driving it hard yesterday with the added stress that the tune puts on the turbo and parking the car without letting the turbos have time to cool off properly. I think the car must activate the cooling fans after the car is shut off to cool off the turbos and thus creating the increase discharge warning.
What's your thoughts on my theory? Have you noticed the light after you have driven you car hard and immediately parking it and letting it sit overnight?

I got this display upon first start up after sitting for 5 months. The car started normally, no slow crank, drove the car for 20 minutes and the display has not returned so far. The car was garaged and on a high end float charger so no way the battery should have been low. I've been doing this every winter for 12 years on an A4, then an E60 with NO problem but this F10 seems to be freaked out. After reading all these posts on the subject I'm beginning to believe the nanny ECU is annoyed that it sat for a long time without being driven (a timer) assuming that's bad for the battery even tho there is no real problem. I'm 68 have driven a LOT of cars and never did I ever dream that a car would be so fussy about the battery or have a nanny that tells you you're not driving the car properly. So we have to drive by their rules? That's just stupid.
