Rear fogs on for many a mile this morning. Cars without their on disappeared into the fog very quickly.

That's the thing. Only BMW goes out of the way to disable access to a feature already there, switch in place on the circuit board and fully wired. Mercedes, Audi, Jaguar... all have the rear fog feature even though it is not required in North America. Go figure.

Another thing which irritates me is the switch from amber to red for rear turn signal. Amber turn signal is so much clearer and safer. But BMW is not alone this time, both Mercedes and Audi do the same.

So, has anyone successfully changed the switch in North America?

This is a minor aspect of the great tableau of American Exceptionalism. We may command wider seats, but we cannot be trusted with bright lights on the backs of our cars.

Hey, look, I can't read my text messages with those bright lights, OK?

Seriously... there's some bozo who I occasionally see on my commute, who has an A4 and ALWAYS has their rear fogs on. Very disconcerting. When I had this configured on my E92, I'd only turn them on for tailgaters and, of course, in the occasional thick fog.

Was wondering the same thing on a successful conversion...looking to upgrade to the White line tail lamps and perhaps do the rear fog switch at the same time - even w/o fog, in heavy rain on the motorways here in Belgium, it's handy - water kicks up so much you lose visibility on cars in front w/o the rear fog...and attaching a bastard light on the bottom (as is standard for US spec cars here) is just out of the question on this car. You can order a US Spec Mini Cooper with a working rear fog lamp...just need it on my car now!

I think "fog light" is a poor description - its a high visibility light for use in poor visibility. I use mine more in heavy spray than in fog.

And yes, I switch off if someone is close behind!
