It would just mean having to own another vehicle for inclement weather. However, I am certainly looking forward to an AWD M5.

I think the only thing is I like to drift. Having AWD would prevent that. Hitting a corner and kicking the back end sideways is an adrenaline rush.

As someone who owned a $110k e60 m5. There are more cons than what others list. Sure my gas mileage was a dreadful 11.5 mpg avg. but what was bad about that was 170 miles to the tank! I hated the car for that. Filled up every 4 days - what a drag.
Next was having to keep the car isolated from others in parking lots . Having such a car was kind of stressful. Paint, interior, valets, parking, etc. Then lastly, was the car wasn't any fun unless going 70+ mph. It was an absolute boat less than 30 mph around turns, etc. the v10 weighed something like 400 lbs more than the v8. Just bought a 535 f10 after loving an e90 335i and wondering why I was thinking. /randomness |

As a F10 M5 owner, it's true, after driving the beast, you will have a smile on your face. The M5 is a joy to drive. I'm getting18 mpg and with a 21 gallon fuel tank, you're able to enjoy driving long distances. Get the M5!!!

The G30 top engine 5 series(maybe still call it 550?) will probably be slightly faster, slightly more aggressive looks, slightly better interior, and lots more tech than the current F10. I don't know if going for M5 at this point will make you happy next year. That's a bet you have to make.
Besides that, you are looking at paying a lot more for more speed. Only you can decide if that's worth it or not. If you want to know what the G30 will look like, just look at the new 7 series they just introduced. It will be the same car but a foot shorter, less leg room in the back and no fancy rear seat options. |

I love the M5, but I can't imagine where you have to live to enjoy that level of power. My 550 already has way more than I can use for 90% of my driving (hell, so did my 335 before it), can't even imagine how big a tease that M5 must be unless you live in a remote area of one sort or another. It sure as hell is sexy though

So, technically, and where my comment came from, an M5 is probably overkill for any daily drive outside of farm country or something, given the simple fact that we have no autobahn like speed limits and there are too many other cars around us. But I won't pretend that would stop me from getting one. Like I said, my 550 is already way overpowered for 90% of my driving.. but I still bought it I think if I were to again spend an hour or more a day commuting each way like you do, it becomes that much more worthwhile. Just have to be careful, having some open space on these highways can be tempting. But it's also deceiving.. with all the traffic, those pockets can close fast and you remember you're not alone in the desert filming a movie on a closed set or something lol. Are you doing that commute in your M3? If that doesn't feel like overkill for you, I would assume the M5 wouldn't either.. |

No...I wanted to but decided to just work with what I have for now. But it was great to get everyones opinions. Mpg is awesome right now and I feel my 535 has adequate power and probably with a flash tune I'll be more than satisfied. I'm having fun right now with my car So I had to think about do I really need a M5 or do I want a M5?

I know some folks aren't real crazy about Dinan because they tend to be pricey, but I did the mod with my dealership because they were comfortable in supporting the warranty on it. I never had any issues or finger pointing with it. I would highly recommend it if you want to bulk up the power. The 535 has good power as it is, but this flash made it feel like a race car. My 535 was a 6 speed MT, so I can't speak to how it affects the shifting on an AT vehicle.

I have the JB4 sitting in my living room and waiting to get installed too. Partly worried about installing it cuz of potential warranty issue. I might just give it a shot this weekend and hope for the best...

IMO I think it's more than just a piggyback because it blends in with the software that controls the engine characteristics. It wasn't really a linear increase in RPMs and a good deal of the acceleration came pretty quickly making the car feel like a rocket. My concern with chipping the car using a piggyback is that the dealership can blame almost anything on the chip. Even if you take it out when you take the car in for service, it seems like they have ways to tell it's been there (I'm far from an expert on this though). Dinan was a safe, supported way to do it and it made the car incredibly fun to drive. It was really night and day performance wise, and at the time made the 535 outperform the 550.
