M5 Axel Back Exhaust on 550i
Hi,
Will any axel back exhaust that fits an M5 fit on a 550i with modification? If so, what mods are needed? Thanks! |

Not exactly sure if any will but M5 mufflers will fit on a 550i no problem.
Here is a thread with some more information: https://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1466412 |

Probably safe to say that most (if not all) can be made to fit with some minor custom welding of the pipes and hangers (if needed). The stock M5 muffler requires a bit of welding, it's not a direct fit.
Keep one thing in mind (I learned the hard way), that mufflers made for the M5 don't necessarily give you optimal sound on the 550i. It will sound great on idle and on WOT, but they will very likely drone (or hum) at cruising speeds when you're between 1k - 2k. Also, you'll get unpleasant back-pressure noise from the muffler. With a completely different design of the manifold, the 550i sound frequencies are just too different for the car to sound close to or as good as an M5 when using a muffler specifically designed for the M5. |

The diffuser exhaust outlet width is different for M5 vs 550. M5 is closer together and higher vs 550 is wider and lower. You would need a new M5 diffuser (stock or aftermarket) to put a M5 exhaust on with the stock hanger configuration.
FYI, if you simply lower the exhaust and widen it, the tips will scrape more easily. Also the stock M5 mufflers would be hard to do without changing the diffuser.

So maybe it's so subjective... I may have to do a hemholtz resonator mod to eliminate droning.
