Question - I hear that hooking up to the battery is a bad idea, but I dont like the idea of leaving the hood open or half closed so close to the aligator clips. Has anyone permanently installed a pigtail in the trunk?

I close my hood all the way down then I lock the car with key fob
I heard if you leave hood open alarm will sound.

A trickle/float charger is an excellent idea - had one for years and occasionally put my F10 on it overnight.

Any charging (trickle or fast) must be done at the Under hood terminals because the energy must go through the IBS battery monitoring systems so the car knows what energy has come and gone from the battery and accurately knows it's state of charge and general big picture condition. I believe manuals from any IBS equipped car state the same (without explaining why)

Sure I'll probably get the "I always charge at the battery and never have problems" replies but the right way is through the IBS.

The alarm does not sound with the hood left open when you lock the car. The clown nose will long blink to tell you that a terminal is not monitored (the hood) but will lock, arm, and monitor all other zones.

If you close the hood it will beep, blink hazards and continue monitoring all zones.

I do this frequently. I just leave the hood up when doing an overnight tickle charge.

Agree with you 100%
on other subject IBS is just pain in the buns when it starts to go bad
it will make all kinds of weird issues

Sorry to bring up an old post.

I got the "check battery" light today.

I also have one of these battery tenders for my motorcycle.

Could I use it to recharge the battery? It's only 0.7amps.

The product page days it will only maintain a vehicle and not charge it.

But maybe if I give it a few days?

I had a 1.5 amp charger that took forever just to maintain. IMHO, you'll want at least a 4 amp charger. The BMW charger is just a rebranded CTEK charger/tender.

What, precisely, is a "check battery *light*". That is none of the options I've described in any of my threads.

If anyone takes anything away from my multiple posts about electrical system diagnostics it is that DETAILS MATTER when reporting or investigating the various indications from the car.

If the warning light came on which looks like a picture of your battery - that's not about the battery. It's almost always about the alternator, and the most common cause is a broken serpentine belt (which brings other risks with it such as ingestion of the belt into the timing gear).
