550i Exhaust Valve
This is for all you mechanics/techs out there. What controls the exhaust valve in in the mufflers on the 550's? When I had my Corvette Z06 there was a fuse you could pull that would keep the valve open. They even make a device that plugs into the fuse socket that you can control the exhaust valve from a fob like an alarm or keyless entry fob.
I looked at the "map" that is tucked in at the bottom of the fuse panel in the trunk, but I couldn't decipher it. There's got to be another fuse panel somewhere else. I checked the owners manual, but couldn't find squat. Most vehicle manufacturers will usually show a fuse panel diagram and what each fuse controls - not BMW. I did see a post for the 3-Series that in the trunk there is a removable panel for access to a harness connection for the exhaust valve, but i couldn't find any other access panels in the trunk of my 550. Does anybody know how to open the exhaust valves short of using tie wire to hold the actuators open? |

The exhaust valve is controlled by vacuum. Its activated at an electric valve located upstream of the muffler. I never located the electric valve so I'm not sure if its located behind a trunk panel or under the car.
next time I have the car on the lift I'll try to trace the vacuum line. It would be interesting to disconnect the electric valve fuse or disconnect the wiring harness to see if the valve defaults to the open or closed position. Of course this could set a CEL as well...
