Converted from Mercedes to BMW.

Wanted to introduce myself to everyone. My last 2 cars have been Mercedes (2004 E55 and 2004 SL55 K4), but I wanted to try something new this time so I found a well optioned, nicely warrantied 2011 BMW 550i and am expecting delivery next week. I'm really looking forward to getting behind the wheel. I've found the MB forums to be very helpful and I'm sure the same can be said for this forum. A few questions:

Is an extended warranty worth it? Background: I drive 10-12k miles annually and the car currently has ~44k miles on it, so the manufacturers warranty will expire shortly. The car has the BMW extended maintenance plan through 100k miles.

What are common modifications? I've read a lot about Dinan, but they're quite expensive for a tune (much like Renntech or Brabus).

Thanks guys. Looking forward to getting more involved once the car gets here.

Congrats for coming over to the dark side.

I was a former owner of 2011 550xdrive and the car was totally solid with only 1 issue and other than that, it was a great car.

As you know, all parts for German made cars are expensive and if something breaks, it is easily thousand of $. Therefore, if you intend to keep the car for a few years, it would be a good idea. Try to negotiate for the extended warranty price with your dealer.

As for mods, common ones are wheels, exhaust, suspension, tune, etc. Once you figure out your budget for mods, then go from there.

Thanks for the input. With regards to dealers, are some cheaper than others on identical warranties? Also, is a BMW extended warranty the way to go versus a third party warranty?

In the States, I believe you can buy your extended warranty from any bmw dealers.

You're right. Some dealers will have option for you to buy 3rd party (to save you a bit of cost) but you can go for bmw extended warranty as well.

You can call up bmwna for any further questions on extended warranty.

Here is an example (last year) of discussion on extended warranty pricing.

You'll love the Bimmer. Came from 4 straight M-B's and I can honestly say there's absolutely not one thing my E-Classes did even near on par with my 5er. This car feels very over-engineered compared to them.
