N55 535i Rattle on Cold Start up
Hey guys, I just bought a 2011 535i for the mrs. Car has only done 36,000km (22,000m). I'm loving the car as a cruisy sport saloon although it badly needs more grunt which hopefully an ecu tune will fix.
My question is, when I unlock the door there is a loud rattle coming from the engine, I imagine its something to do with the fuel pump primer or something but it doesn't sound good. The noise only lasts for a about 1 second and doesn't happen all the time. Also when I start the car it sounds real rattly in the upper engine for about another second before it settles down and then the rest of the time the car drives perfectly. Any ideas? Could it be the HPFP, wastegate? Cheers |

My '12 has that same, rattly noise on cold start-up. I'm led to believe it's the wastegate and totally normal. I even asked my SA and he said it was normal... I've driven the car almost 40K miles since I got it almost 2 years ago and that sound has not led to any adverse condition. |

On my e92 335, I had the rattle as well. My cousin had the same car but hers didn't rattle. They replaced turbos once. Then after they said wastegate bolts were "loose" causing a piece of loose metal to shake causing the noise. So they "tightened" them. Noise came back a few days later
My 535i has that rattle upon cold start as well. And after the cold start if I drive it and shift into second, and let off the gas, it rattles as the rpms are coming down. Super annoying sound to be claimed to be "normal" in my opinion for the price tag of the vehicle. |

These cars new are $140k here so rattles being normal is simply unacceptable! |

castrol, liquidmoly, motul and see if the rattling subdues. then you will know if it is turbo or valves. |
