Ready for a New Car: 535i vs 740i ?
Im graduation college this May and I think it's best that I retire my 3 series upon doing so. Im in my early 20's but my taste has become more about comfort, class, and daily driving than sport since I bought the e92. Leaning towards the F10 535i M Sport because it seams like a good balance, but recently the 740i has cause my attention. I plan on buying with low miles and keeping it for 3-5 years.
Any opinions, recommendations, or ownership/ maintenance comments are appreciated !

I've been in the same situation when I sold my C300. It all depends on budget. I personally did the same thing and got myself 535i because its full of comfort but still has some fun when I need it too.

I was in the same boat when I graduated. Wanted something comfy but also wanted something sporty. Solution?
Go for a 5 series with the dynamic handling package so you get the comfort of a 7 if you want it, or a ride as tight as an m5 at the push of a button. Plus, the 5 series is just a lot more fun to drive than a big ol 6 cylinder 740i (at least in my opinion). And a lot more people mod the 5 series than the 7 series so you'll have a huge community online and a lot of modding posts from the past to refer to. |

535 is the big ol 6 cyl My 4.4 was a rocket ship to be sure, though not long lasting due to the valve seal issue

Go buy yourself another coupe. If you drive a 5 or a 7, people are going to think that you borrowed your dad's car.

Thanks for the opinions guys, my outdated 3 series has the sport suspension and honestly it is brutal where I live so I would like to see how the DHP compares on a bigger car. Handling is great, but too much road feel...all i feel is bumpy weathered roads. I just wanted to see if the ride quality of the 7 is significantly superior and I would be missing out. My dads old 745 was smooth as butter but that was back 02'

I came from E92 with sport suspension; and I have experience on DHP and M Sport suspension on F10
1st, E92 ride quality is exactly what you described, there is no comparison to F10 regardless it is equipped with DHP, M Sport suspension, or even stock suspension, F10 ride is much much quieter and smooth, and yes, E92 is brutal especially after you switch between E92 and F10, it is simply day and night. F10 DHP is great, ride is smooth not better but close to air suspension on some other vehicles I had owned. But you significantly loose the road and steering feel. M Sport suspension is bumpy compare to DHP, but you gain road and steering feel, which reminds you that you are driving a sport oriented sedan. I would suggest you to test drive both and see which ride quality appeal to you the most. Last edited by 07e92; 02-17-2017 at 08:40 PM.. |

I have a 2015 F10 535 X drive on H&R suspension with 20 inch wheels and my ride is still super comfy while still having the aggressive but classy appearance. The balance between sport and comfort in the 5 is unprecedented, and I highly recommend it.

Now, I'm 27 so it's a bit more acceptable. My main reason for the f10 is that I am 6 foot 6 so I can't do the real sporty models. Once Im older I'm sure Ill move on to a 7 series or something, but my 535 is a great balance for now. It really depends on your price range, but I haven't regretted my 535 (diesel model) yet. Fun when I want it to be, very comfortable for daily driving.

Sorry for another "back in my day" rant... my cars in college were Nissan 240sx and 300z...my first car out of college was a D2 S8...only by the good graces of my uncle who was very irate that his 3 year old car was offered $15k for trade against a new 7 series at the time circa 2004. So I'm working my first corporate job and I show up one day in a $80k German Super Sedan.....for which I paid $15k for! I did however work on that car every weekend.... price to pimp such a car at a young age.

Have an E90 w sports suspension on run flats and not terrible, but the Pilot A/S 3+ on my F10 is more supple, especially after suspension mods. The only thing about the 535i is the wait for the turbo to rush in. It is much smoother in Sport mode. I have no idea about the M Sport .

I like hearing that the F10 is a major upgrade in terms of comfort and smoothness, i also like that the long chassis is compared to the older 7 series. I think the M Sport package makes a world of difference in the looks. Really love that look. I ran Toyo's on the 3 series, never been a fan of the run flats. I thought I read that the f10 M sport package doesn't include a suspension upgrade so maybe I can find one with the DHP.

I'm not sure if I really would have had the discipline for home ownership at 22. I know a buddy who did and doubled up in Chicagos boom... a few hundred grand to start his 25th birthday from his condo sale.
