The A6 Premium Plus model with 2.0T is $45,920.
The A6 Premium Plus model with 3.0 TFSI is $54,120.
The 2012 BMW 528i xDrive with similar options to the Audi model is $54K.

So Audi prices their 2.0T A6 $8K less than their 6.

If I wanted a 4-banger I would seriously consider the Audi and pay $8K less than a 4-banger 528.

I think it's funny that people are loathing the loss of the i6 when it comes to "performance". Are we still talking about a 240hp 6cyl in a 4000lb car? Are you saying you will miss the sound and grunt of that "strung out" 6 making the earth spin with it's massive 240hp at 6000 rpm?

Skip the new 528i if that's the case. You can probably pick up a camry that will get you a nice 6 cyl with 240hp. Lol

My decision....

After test driving a 2011 528i I decided it had enough power for me (especially at a $5,000 savings) and would have bought one, if they could have found one with the options I wanted. The 6 cylinder engine just felt so smooth and effortless. When I realized I would need to order a 2012 to get all my options, it became a different decision. While the 4 cylinders engine looked better on paper than the outgoing 6, I didn't want to be one of the first purchasers and then find out the engine has to work too hard for this size of car. Now, that $5,000 savings didn't sound quite as important. Also, one of the options I would have paid extra for on the 528 (Comfort Access keyless entry) was included on the 535's premium pkg., so the price difference between the 528 and 535 for me was now about $4,000.
Maybe after the 4 cylinder has proven itself at this weight class for a few years I would consider it. When I placed my order there weren't even any reviews out yet. Easy decision for me going with the 535.

I would buy this car. Nice wheel upgrade for $1,500.

If there is one car where BMW will face consumer resistance to the new turbo 4 in the US, this is it. It will not matter if it drives good. I don't think there will be a problem with the smaller cars or the X3.

That's taken by the model that uses the 184hp version of this same engine. When you have multiple versions of the engine with different outputs, you can't just name them all the same. There will be 23i and likely 25i versions in the future too. Only the 28i will be sold in the US though.

Clearly you have not owned any I6 engines in your time. Its not just the fact they are replacing the I6 with the I4 in this particular application but rather this ends the development of more powerful I6's which have been happening for decades. The 255hp output version in the 330/530i e60 was great. Car weighed 3500 pounds (3600 for the e60) and it was a pleasure to drive. They have never been the fastest but that does not mean because they are not a total beast that one cannot enjoy their sound and feel.

I think 240 hp is simply way underpowered for a 4000 pound sedan. The e60 was much lighter and I would say the 255hp was JUST enough for it to be fun to drive so I agree with the raw power arguement. However sound has nothing to do with power. Some huge engines sound like crap and some smaller ones sound amazing so you cannot go by size or output of engine to judge sound.

I6 are sure smooth pleasure to drive, but new I4 turbo with 240 HP has more torque at low rpm to over come the extra weight of F10, so it should perform well. 0 to 60 of 6.3 seconds in F10 according to inside line.

I have had i6 before and was not too attached with it. Sure, smooth motor but nothing that was so addicting that I will be sad to see it gone. The new i4 turbo is a decent motor. With the new i4 5series I got 37mpg average on a 200km drive with city (20km) but mostly highway at speeds between 110 kmh- 125kmh.

To me, since the i6 is the low level BMW option they are smart to make it economical. Nobody Is buying a 528 over a 535 because the 528 has a better motor. They are buying it to save money and now they can save money in fuel too.

I will say that I'm sad that there is very noticeable turbo lag with the i4. And I think you will see many complaints here about this.

I though would buy a 535 or 550 if I want a stout motor not a 528 which I would buy for economy.

The Audi 2.0T makes substantially less hp than the N20, although I believe the torque is in the same neighborhood...

Depending on the application these engines can produce the same torque and HP.

Yes, 211hp in the new A6 2.0T. So about 12% less than the 528i. However, I think the A6 weighs a little less so straight-line performance will probably be similar. Even so, I'd definitely prefer the BMW since it is RWD vs. the FWD Audi.

So you would trade lag for turbo-torque?
So, that the 528 is cheaper is actually a negative, hence infer that 'status' is important..
And, you don't find the NA I6 anything special..

The exact opposite of me..
I LOVE the NA I6..
I hate turbo lag, the extra torque does not compensate me for it
I care less about status /can accept owning the 'lower' 528.. in objectivity, buying the 535 is not logical from a driving-enjoyment persective, you would only get it for its 'status' .. because adding a turbo is not a mod a everybody would do

They definitely underprice the 528 (w/I6) and overprice the the 535 (w/I6+turbo) .. the difference is human vanity wrt. social constucts

I do not see anywhere that I state anything about status. It is simply the low level 5 series engine package that is being discussed here. If you take that as me saying that somebody who purchases this is inferior then that can only be a complex you have given yourself. The fact is that the 528i is the economy 5 series and it now has a more economical engine.

I honestly am having a hard time following your post so I am sorry if I am responding in a way that suggests anything other than what you meant.

To me the NA i6 was a weak motor in the 528. It has low power for a 4000lb car, it has low tq for a big heavy car and if I was looking for a motor that I wanted a little better performance I would not be buying a 528i because of both the i6 and the i4. I would instead consider a 535 or 550 because they have more power the 535 really is not much more money as it has a few options standard that I would be putting in the 528 anyhow. I think that if I have the choice between two motors that to me are equally underpowered for a car I would go with the one that gives me better economy. Does that make sense?

The other thing is that if you are driving the 528i i4 properly you will barely ever feel the lag. I stated it as I can see it becoming an issue with people that want to stand on it at 2500 RPM and pass somebody. Downshift a few gears get the rpm to 5000 and put your foot in it and you will eliminate the lag in almost any car that people complain about turbo lag.

I agree! The I6 is/was robust in the 330i, but not so much in the 528. An automatic transmission made it feel even more anemic.

There seems to be no efficiency gain from the N20 — the 1 or 2 mpg improvement probably comes mostly from the Start/Stop function being added. I would not want a turbo motor (because of the lag, which ruins every shift); I wouldn't care to have a four-cylinder motor in any case. BMW has essentially given up its distinctive appeal as far as I am concerned. There are plenty of other, less expensive choices for anyone who wants a turbo 4. I see this move as about as clever as the GT replacing the wagon.
