I did a quick video today, before removing my vibrant resonators and install the stock mufflers back. But still keeping my x-pipe.
Wanted to try the difference again.
My setup is modular, so i can replace each section in a very quick time.
Took me less then 45 minutes to switch.

With the vibrants, i get a good amount of drone.
But with the factory mufflers, is quiet like stock.
Not worth doing just an x-pipe with factory mufflers.

The video has a deeper tone since i filmed it with my gopro cam. The audio is not as deeper in real life.

Here are a few pictures.
It's winter time here, so road grime has made it real dirty looking LOL

As you can see by weldign my stainless steel mufflers and tips with regular mig wire. It no has some surface rust on those welds.
But i was expecting this to happen. Didn't have access to SS mig wire at that time.
My next 3'' set will be welded with SS wire.

-For flaps to stay open on stock exhaust, you need to get a clamp or even heavy duty zip ties( but the plastic might melt) and you need to squeeze the flap open amd thrn clamp it against the arm of the butterfly vale, it sounds complicated, its easy actually.
550's exhaust is not like a 335 for example where you can pull the vaccum line and keep it open, it uses vaccuum to open to valve so by disconnecting it, your valve never opens
You need to use metal clamp on the top actuator thing to hold it open.
Im sure, that + downpipes will be the way to go.

Edman,

Thats for the post. Any drone with the stock mufflers and x pipe?

Also, nne last option, and I know that you showed a clip of it but, what about removing the stock resonators (and replacing the center muffler with an xpipe) with the stock exhaust. I wonder if that will get the sound up and the drone down?

With my x-pipe and Stock mufflers, It has zero drone, and actually almost 98% like stock. not worth it for someone to just change the mid-pipe with an x-pipe.

i am loading up a video of that set up now, will post it

FYI, did another test on Friday.
i figured i should try all the possible combo's with my setup to find the sweet spot, and reduce the drone with out any parts.
So here is my conclusion.

-Stock center resonator (x-pipe) with my vibrant muffler = drone from 1300-2000rpm. But sound great.
- My X-pipe with with my vibrant muffler = same drone as above. from 1300-2000rpm. But sound even beter then with the stock center resonator.
-My x-pipe with factory mufflers = no drone, a bit of sound, but needs a bit more for my taste.

So to reduce drone, i will need to tap in to the line and add a resonance chamber. Like Active Autowerk does on the E9X M3 exhaust system.
Or maybe i will try this muffler from Dynomax. Looks interesting.

You may be onto something.
Looks like a nice fit also with the short 14" case and offset inlet to help with the tight bend on the inlet side. Dynomax priced right at Summit for $100 ea.

tp550i, yes the offset helps, but it's real thight.
I just took some mesurement tonight, and adding tips to the muffler really increases the space required.
Now i'm just debating if i go for it or not. hmmmm

sorry can't help, as i dont have one, but from Realoem,
I see the 528 uses the same 70mm clamp i used on my 550i.
http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...77&hg=18&fg=20

So you could get a custom exhaust made locally, clamp on style. if you ever want to return to stock. and not have issues of rewelding the system.

replacing the stock resonator with an x pipe makes No difference in sound. I did it, I cannot notice any difference in sound from stock.

I keep the stock mufflers and replaced my center muffler with an x pipe and also removed the stock resonators. It sounds about 10-15% louder under certain conditions.

Increase in boost?

Late to the discussion but just wanted to comment:
Great post and follow up! I'm really starting to contemplate an exhaust mod myself.
One question if nobody's asked. You mentioned you were able to measure an increase in turbo boost to 12psi? And that was just with the middle resonator replaced with an x pipe? Apparently that middle resonator is very restrictive.
12psi is huge (for a non race car)...You must have noticed an appreciable step in acceleration. Was it off idle, midrange, or top end?
Thanks

I was wondering if Corsa mufflers from an e39 M5 would work for for an F10 550 application. The mufflers are offset, but if they were swapped left to right and right to left I wonder how they'd fit. As you know Corsa's are known to be drone free. I had a Corsa muffler on one of my Chevy trucks and you only heard it when you got on it or there was a load on the engine. You heard it but it was never intrusive. Corsa's sound awesome plus they are more than 1/3 of the price of a Meisterschaff (sp) or Dinan exhaus, but you'd have to get creative to install these on an F10.

If I knew this would work, this would be the route I'd go.

Do you suspect there will be drone by replacing the muffles with those from a f10 m5 while keeping everything else stock?

Thanks for taking the time and sharing all the pics and videos. Great work.
