N63 Custom Built Downpipes

Hey guys. This mechanic said he can make me some custom 3" catless Downpipes stainless steel for 250 bucks installed. What are the risks going this route ?

He said its going to be just as good quality as other Downpipes on the market.

There really is no risk as long as he knows what he's doing and puts the O2 bung in the correct location... All the currently offered downpipes are extremely overpriced (much like everything BMW), but I'm too lazy to do my own and build a jig, so if your guy is willing to give away labor that cheap (turbo flanges alone are about $30 each plus $120 in stainless) he's literally not making anything. That being said, I obviously can't see his welding ability, but if they are decent tell the guy to make a jig and knock a few sets out.

He said they are going to be 9 bolt. I hope they know where to put the o2 sensor , but if not where is the correct position?

And in general, his exhaust work is pretty inexpensive.

Yah it will be ready today so I'll have some videos up. If they catch any of your guys attention I'll tell him to make a few more.

There's still a chance for the check engine light even with the o2 bung sensor, right ?

Wow that's crazy cheap... If this guy is a friend I guess I could see it as there is literally no money being made here, otherwise sounds like he is almost desperate for work and I would be cautious.
Good luck and keep us updated!

Are the 550 downpipes significantly different than downpipes on other cars ? These guys have lots of experience with boosted cars (supras, s14) so I'm sure they know their way around a turbo.

It's an honest shop with good work, he said if I would've already had the downpipes , they could've installed it for 80 bucks.

I wouldn't risk it, unless that 250 comes with installation.
Or your installing it yourself.

DP install is a 3-4 hour job 300-500.
So lets say he doesnt do it right, then it will cost you some major $$$ to get the stock ones back on etc and headache.

Should of bought my used ERs, sold them for super cheap.

Getting custom downpipes is a risky move.
As you mentioned you have the $250 + labor
Not to mention how hard it will be getting it 100% correct with the first part they manufacture. Any small mistake will result in drone, leak, gas smell inside the cabin, etc...

OP,
You should also make sure that the shop is using stainless steel pipes that can withhold the heat and pressure or else the results might be catastrophic.

It looks like I misunderstood the guy. He didn't build an entire downpipe but just a 3" connector I believe he said.

Thing sounds deeper, and pulls harder. Throttle response is real sensitive too. No gas smells or anything. Exhaust sounds crack and pop more.

Just as close to the factory location as possible. They are calibrated in the ECU based on location, temperature etc and moving it further downstream can skew results.

Its not tough to build anything, but I don't even get out of bed for $250, let alone build a set of downpipes including labor and parts. Maybe he's just a good buddy, but at the going rate he has less than an hour of labor in there figuring he's giving you the steel and materials at cost.

It might be. There is no loud turbo sound like what downpipes would give off. But the car pulls hard. I'll get some pics /vids up later today

When I had only RPI M5 mufflers.. There was no drone but it wasn't loud enough for me.

But now in the video I did resonator delete as well and whatever the hell the guy did to the stock downpipes. Slight drone but it's worth the rumble
