I wonder how long it will be before we see the first UK Police F10 ? After all, the current 530d is reckoned to be the Road Police favourite.

While it is the German Red Cross that typically "controls" these vehciles, the car's purpose is actually as a response vehicle for an emergency physician. You can get an ambulance or an ambulance and a physcian as part of an emergency medical response, depending on the nature of the car. I have seen mostly A4 and 3 series wagons in my area of Germany, serving in this role.
