"BMW loaner", that's a catch phrase that was thrown out when I bought my CPO E60 in 2008. We were told if we bought the car here (BMW of Monrovia), we'd be guaranteed of getting a BMW as a loaner car when we brought our car in for service. Well as it turns out there was probably only one car and it was never available. This dealership has a their own Enterprise Rent A Car store on their lot. They only have the lowest of all rental cars available - PT Cruisers, Nissan Sentras with roll up windows, Toyota Echos - and yes you do have to pay a rental fee and if you bring it back after 5pm you will be charged for another day. And if you want to "rent" a BMW it'll cost you about $120+ a day and you have limited free miles (like 50).

As you can tell, I hate this dealership for a myriad of reasons and so does everyone else who has gone here for service (and sales). So, stay away from BMW of Monrovia in Monrovia, California.

Sorry for the hijack. Please continue.

In Belgium you pay 40€/day for a 1/3 series and 50€/day for a 5 series loaner.
They never charged it to me, but I heard of some friends they had to pay for it.

Perhaps some dealers may offer some kinda "creative" paid flavor of a loner car, but as long as Lexus, Audi and others have it for free BMW will have it too.

If a dealer wants to charge you for a loaner, change the dealer.
This BS does fly in the US, although at a much lower cost. My dealer(one of the largest dealers in the country) charges one time flat fee of $3.95 for loaners, and limits you to 75 miles per day.

Sure it does, as long as they are able to find some naive Joe who's willing to bend over.

Walk away the moment they pull this stunt at you. The beauty of competitive market. I never try to prove my point to the dealer I just ask and if the answer is "no" then I walk. There are prolly 20 different BMW dealers in the tri-state area.

I never paid for a loaner in my life. I don't always take a loaner, but when I opt for it its always free, be it Audi or BMW. Loaner availability is a different story, but I was never asked to pay.

Sucks for those who have to use only one dealer

No such thing as a loaner exists here, even if your 7 Series breaks down under warranty.
All you get is a ride home.

And we pay between 60 and 100% more for all BMW models than the USA

Most U.S. dealers will only put you in a "BMW loaner" if you bought the car from them and even then it might require an appointment made 4 weeks in advance. It is definitely used as a carrot to persuade buyers to buy locally.

I opt for a rental over the shuttle, but for $25 I'd just go for even the lowest trim BMW instead of the usual Sentra/Corolla/Focus. I guess I am saying I could see this actually being acceptable in the U.S.A. in some cases.

Must be a west coast thing, I have never service my car at my purchasing dealer and never had a problem with loaner cars. Dealer makes more money servicing cars than selling them. If their service department wants my business, they will give me a loaner.

How far ahead do you set your appointments?

I will try it again - but I bet my current local Roseville BMW (Sacramento area) basically tells me to pound sand. I've had multiple new/cpo BMW's over the past 14 years and BMW San Mateo, BMW Fremont, BMW Stevens Creek (San Jose), Weatherford BMW (Berkeley), and East Bay BMW (Pleasanton) have all just said "you didn't buy your car here and there is a 4 week appt window even if you did so here's a rental." It might just require baller status or illuminati membership or something but that's what I've always ran in to.

Usually about 2 weeks or so. Here in Boston, there is about 4 BMW dealers within a 20 miles radius of my house. They are always senting me coupons and such trying to get my business and I dont think I have ever got a non-BMW loaner. It is a ashame that BMW NA do not have a loaner car policy like Lexus, there should be some sort of standards when it comes to dealer loaner cars.
