I assume the logic behind is that even with the sun lowish in the sky but still bright, that for drivers driving INTO the sun may have difficulty picking out a car coming towards them if they are blinded by the sun. I've certainly been in that situation before and dipped beam will ensure that there is the contrast there and allow people driving towards you (towards the sun) that you standout.
with the sun behind you , your view may be perfectly ok (which is where the complaints might be coming from) but as I say , drivers driving towards you may have more difficulty picking you out initially. |

The function that BMW uses for the light sensor is somehow very complicated and it is very difficult to know when it is the time that it turns on. There are threads (Like this) that talk about it a lot. I found that in the morning or around sunset or even afternoon when you go toward sunlight it will turn it on. Think about it this way, if it is difficult for the cars coming toward you to see your daylight lights then it will be on.

I mean the tail light beening on is part of the reason BMW turn the head lights on during solar glare situations. I dont agree with it myself, I turn the auto headlights off in the day time.
