Tire Advice on 550i (runflat or non runflats)
I need get some new tires on my 2011 BMW 550i non Xdrive with the Sport Package. The car came with Michelin Primacy Run Flats. The front are 245/40 R 19 and the rear are 275/35 R 19.
I have heard good things about the Michelin Pilot Super Sports, but they are not run flats. Does anyone have any opinions on running non-runflat tires? Thanks |

XLR8 - I've used the pilot super sports on my 335i, replacing the OEM RFTs. While I can't comment on how they'd do on the 550 (mine is brand new), I CAN say that I've gone through several sets of these on the 335 over the years. They're AWESOME tires. They wear well, they're quiet, and they performed well in all weather conditions. I'll likely get them for the 550 when it's time to replace the original RFTs.
For safety's sake, I got a Continental ContiComfort Kit to keep in the trunk. It's comprised of a mini compressor and "fix a flat"-like goo that can repair small tire damage if necessary. Luckily, I never needed to use it - roughly $80 from TireRack, though, so nice inexpensive peace of mind.

I made the switch to Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3's on my 2012 550 with XDrive and the change from the Goodyear LS2's is quite noticeable! The handling has improved dramatically and the Michelins run through light snow very well! A friend of mine at a dealership gave me a fair price on a bent 19" wheel which I sent off to be repaired at Ye Olde Wheel & Welding. After straightening and an awesome resurfacing job I have a full sized spare bagged in the trunk.

Have the Pilot SS on my 535 with the staggered setup and the increase in grip is astounding. I actually thought the Dunlop RFs were good other than horribly short life. The pilot SS definitely ride softer yet are more precise at the same time. Car handles much better with them. If you are ok with a non RFT these are great. I'm still waiting to see how these wear over time especially since I want to take all corners faster on these things.

I have a 535 staggerd set up with a new set of Michelin AS3's. I went with an all season tire for the handful of days we get frozen precipitation. After 2400 miles and replacing two out of round rear tires. I now have a tire noise between 70-80 mph. Tire rack switched them out and I have a set of Michelin PSS sitting in the garage waiting to be put on..... As luck would have it, it's sleeting today!
I also have a BMW mobility kit and a dynaplug I carry in my trunk. I haven't used on a car yet, but it fixed a motorcycle tire in a flash. No glue necessary and it's all in a self contained tool that's refillable. http://www.dynaplug.com

Thanks for the feedback and info on the dynaplug. Just ordered my Michelin Pilot Super Sports from TireRack.com and I am going to order the Dyna Plug as well. I'm looking forward to getting my new Michelins and I will update once installed. |

You will love having high-performance non-runflats. Made a hugely noticeable difference for me. I replaced the Primacy RFTs with Bridgestone Potenza S-04's. Way more grip, plus smoother riding, quieter, and barely half the price of what it'd cost to get a new Primacy if/when they failed. Also road hazard insurance is only about $80/set versus the $1000+ from the dealer.
