Update: fixed
2a99 2a98 bmw
I'm getting stumped on these. This is my cousins 2012 X5 n63. Im trying to help him out. His car was smoking due to valve seals and had to faults(going into limp mode) I finally finished the valve seals on it and Checked the timing while doing the valve seals, it appeared to have been a tooth off. So I thought I found the problem. But after putting it back together, the fault still exists! I already replaced the cam sensors, replaced all 4 vanos sensors(prior to bringing it to me). It goes into limp mode immediately at start up. Any idea? I'm getting frustrated with this. |

Did you try reprogramming the vehicle?
Try replacing the solenoids again -Contaminated oil passage at VANOS solenoid valve -Oil pressure too low -Defective wires or plug terminals on VANOS solenoid valve -VANOS solenoid valve seized -VANOS solenoid valve defective Check camshaft and VANOS unit for freedom of movement and mechanical damage Maybe run some Marvel Mystery Oil through it Last edited by 535_BiTurbo; 01-16-2018 at 12:00 PM.. |

I don't think it is vanos related. It had the fault, before replacing all 4 vanos and replaced them. No difference. |

Update
Just go give anyone an update.
Took the valve covers back off and checked the timing, it was correct. EXCEPT driver side exhaust camshaft was exactly 180 degrees upside down. It lines up both ways with the tools and it even has a flat spot in the cam to show you upwards. I guess I was tired or over looked it. Many late night afterhour jobs. Loosened the camshaft bolt and cam caps. Rotated the camshaft 180 degrees and tightened it. The big moment of truth was, did I bend any valves.. Did a compression test and numbers were beautiful 180-170 across. Put everything back together and started it up. No faults and purrs perfectly. |
